According to a major league source, Red Sox second baseman Dustin Pedroia is on track to be activated from the 15-day disabled list on Thursday night, with corner infielder Mauro Gomez being sent back to Triple-A Pawtucket to clear a roster spot for the three-time All-Star.
Pedroia, who earlier this month thought he might be on the disabled list for a few weeks to a right thumb injury, will beat that timetable by returning on the first day of his eligibility to come off the disabled list. In 74 games, he's hitting .266/.326/.400/.726 with six homers and six steals.
Gomez went 1-for-4 on Wednesday as a one-day fill-in for David Ortiz as designated hitter. On the season, he's now hitting .300 with a .723 OPS in nine games spanning three call-ups. He's hitting .317/.371/.634/1.005 with 20 homers in Triple-A.
