Giants players Melky Cabrera and Pablo Sandoval sparked a five-run first inning off Tigers ace Justin Verlander, and the National League cruised to an 8-0 victory over the American League in Tuesday night's All-Star Game in Kansas City.
Cabrera, who played for the hometown Royals last season, was named MVP after hitting a single and two-run home run in three at-bats. Sandoval hit a bases-loaded triple in the first.
"I didn't come to win an MVP. That's just a surprise," Cabrera said. "The same opportunity that Kansas City gave me last year is the same opportunity that San Francisco is giving me every day to showcase my talent. Again, I'm just very thankful for the fans that voted for me to come here."
Giants pitcher Matt Cain, who allowed one hit in two innings, was the winner as the NL won for the third time in a row, giving the NL representative home-field advantage in the World Series.
The Red Sox' lone representative, David Ortiz, went 1-for-2, singling for one of the AL's six hits on the night.
