According to a major league source, Dustin Pedroia likely will be placed on the 15-day disabled list with an injury to his right thumb that is in a different area than the torn adductor muscle that made the second baseman miss six games in early June.
Pedroia sat out Wednesday's series finale in Oakland after sustaining what he termed an injury to the back side of his right thumb the night before. He underwent tests in Boston Thursday, at which time it was determined the injury would necessitate a trip to the disabled list.
According to another major league source, surgery will not be required, with the source expecting that Pedroia will be ready to return at the conclusion of his disabled list clock (approximately July 19).
The Red Sox will make a corresponding roster move prior to their Friday night game against the Yankees.
Pedroia is hitting .266 with a .726 OPS this season. Since coming back from the initial injury, the infielder was hitting .210 with a .587 OPS in 26 games.
The Boston Herald was first to report the likely transaction.
