Red Sox manager Bobby Valentine told reporters in Oakland that right-hander Daisuke Matsuzaka would be placed on the disabled list after suffering a recurrence of the discomfort in his right trapezius muscle at the base of the neck. Matsuzaka allowed five runs while recording just three outs on Monday night, inflating his ERA after five starts to 6.65. He is 0-3 for the year.
With Matsuzaka heading to the DL at a time when Will Middlebrooks has been sidelined with a hamstring injury, the Red Sox will add a right-handed bat to their bench by calling up Mauro Gomez from Triple-A Pawtucket. Gomez was 0-for-2 in the majors this year, but he's been one of the top hitters in the Triple-A International League all year. The 27-year-old is hitting .311 with a .366 OBP, a .614 slugging mark, a .980 OPS and 19 homers in 72 games.
Meanwhile, an industry source confirmed that the Red Sox plan to call up Justin Germano on Wednesday. The right-hander had exercised an opt-out clause in his contract on Monday after he was not added to the Red Sox' big league roster by July 1. However, the Sox will add Germano to their roster within the 48-hour window that they have (which expires on Wednesday afternoon) to do so. The 29-year-old is 9-4 with a 2.40 ERA, 72 strikeouts and just 13 walks in 105 innings this year for the PawSox.
