The Celtics took Syracuse center Fab Melo with their second first-round pick, the 22nd overall selection in the draft Thursday night. Melo was the Big East's Defensive Player of the Year and averaged 7.8 points, 5.8 rebounds and 2.9 blocks for the Orange.
Melo grew up in Brazil and didn't start playing competitively until his freshman year in high school in southern Florida. He played only 10 minutes a game, but played a more prominent role with Syracuse as a sophomore.
