Speaking before the Red Sox series opener against the Indians, Sox manager Bobby Valentine said he had talked to Josh Beckett about the pitcher's May 3 golf outing, and didn't have any concerns regarding the pitcher's participation.
There had been some controversy surrounding the outing since it was a day after Beckett had been scratched from his scheduled May 5 start due to a right lat strain.
"I talked to Josh. He's ready to go, feels great and I'm looking forward to the performance," said Valentine of Beckett, who was slated to start Thursday night. "I've never seen a pitcher get hurt playing golf."
When asked if he could understand some of the concern regarding the golf outing because of Beckett's reported ailment, Valentine said, "I didn't think he was injured when he was skipped."
