The Bruins issued the following statement Thursday in light of the racist comments that were tweeted by fans following Joel Ward's series-clinching overtime goal on Wednesday.
The Bruins are very disappointed by the racist comments that were made following the game last night. These classless, ignorant views are in no way a reflection of anyone associated with the Bruins organization.
Ward's parents moved from Barbados to Toronto before Ward was born (his father died when he was 14). The 31-year-old forward sent a rebound from a Mike Knuble shot past Tim Thomas in overtime Wednesday to give Washington a 2-1 overtime victory over the Bruins and eliminate the defending Stanley Cup champions from the postseason.
