Reached by phone in Minnesota, Red Sox shortstop Mike Aviles disputed a report in the New York Daily News that described a "very ugly scene" in which manager Bobby Valentine "got all over" him during infield drills during spring training.
"I don't know where that came from," said Aviles. "I don't remember any incident like that. ... There was nothing that comes to mind that would be anything like that other than just normal player/coach interaction."
The report suggested that Valentine had to apologize to Aviles after the incident. But, asked if there was an instance in which the manager had done anything that would have warranted an apology or if Valentine had taken it upon himself to apologize for an incident, Aviles said, "No."
Bill Madden, who wrote the story detailing the incident, joined the Mut & Merloni Show on Monday afternoon. Asked to describe the dispute and what made it "ugly," he said, "That was just the way it was described to me. I wasn't there, so I can't tell you how ugly it was, but that was the descriptive word given to me. They said it was very ugly."
