Former Red Sox third baseman Adrian Beltre told WEEI.com prior to the series finale between his Rangers and the Sox Wednesday that the thing that shocked him the most about the chaos surrounding his former team following 2011 was how public it became.
"It surprised me that it came out," Beltre said. "I think some other teams do it, but it doesn't come out. We do a lot of things in the clubhouse that aren't supposed to come out of the clubhouse, but for some reason it happened that it came out."
When asked if he was referring to anything specific in regard to the clubhouse activities, Beltre said, "Stuff in general. Stuff that people shouldn't know outside because it's all confidential here.
"I was shocked, not that it happened, but that it came out and somebody said something about it," he added.
Beltre reiterated that he both enjoyed his one year in Boston, particularly playing for manager Terry Francona.
"For coming here in 2010? It was perfect," he said. "Being in a place knowing that we were going to compete. Coming into the season I knew we one of the favorites to make the playoffs. Knowing that I didn't have to be the guy, that we had a good offensive lineup and there were other guys so I could complement something. It was easier to come to Boston just to help the other guys and go to a place I didn't need to be the guy and put pressure on myself. I think it was a perfect fit.
"I totally liked Francona, because he knew we were veteran players who knew how to get ready for the game. It was really comfortable playing for him. I liked it."
Beltre hit .292 with an .892 OPS and 32 home runs in his first season with the Rangers, in '11. After 12 games, the third baseman has a .292 batting average and .819 OPS with two home runs this season.
He is in the second year of a five-year, $80 million contract with Texas, that also includes a club option for $16 million in '16.
"It was a good fit at the moment. I liked my time here. But Looking back I made the right decision," said Beltre of signing with Texas. "I couldn't have made a better decision. I'm really happy here."
