Red Sox manager Bobby Valentine told The Big Show that reliever Mark Melancon has been demoted to Triple-A Pawtucket. Junichi Tazawa has been promoted to take Melancon's spot.
Melancon is coming off an appearance Tuesday night in which he allowed six runs on four hits, including three home runs while not recording an out. In his two innings this season, the reliever has allowed 11 runs on 10 hits over two innings over four appearances.
The righty hasn't been in the minor leagues since 2010, when he appeared in 40 games for the Yankees' Triple-A team in Scranton Wilkes-Barre.
In four games with Pawtucket this season, Tazawa hasn't allowed a run over seven innings, giving up five hits while striking out nine and walking two.
