The Red Sox on Sunday designated pitcher Michael Bowden and catcher Luis Exposito for assignment. The moves were made in order to clear room on the 40-man roster for Nate Spears and Jason Repko, both recalled to the Red Sox on Sunday.
A first-round supplemental pick in 2005 (47th overall), Bowden had a 5.61 ERA and 1.58 WHIP in 39 career appearances (two starts) with the Sox. The 25-year-old has pitched in Pawtucket in each of the last four seasons, posting a 3.27 ERA in 103 appearances.
Exposito - a 31st-round pick of the Sox in 2005 - played six minor league seasons in the Sox organization, batting .268 with an OPS of .744 in 1,848 at-bats. He was called up from Pawtucket to Boston last June but did not appear in a game.
