According to an industry source, the Red Sox have offered designated hitter David Ortiz a two-year deal worth $18 million. News of the offer was first reported in a tweet from ESPN Boston's Joe McDonald [1].
Ortiz' representatives will meeet with the Sox tonight to continue negotiations betweenthe player and club. Ortiz has yet to make a decision on whether to accept salary arbitration; he must accept or decline the offer (which would guarantee him a pay increase, likely in the $15 million to $16 million range, on a one-year deal for 2012 while also keeping open the opportunity to discuss a multi-year deal) by midnight on Wednesday night.
Ortiz made $12.5 million last season, and according to the source, he is looking to make the same amount annually in his next deal. The DH is seeking a two-year, $25 million. In nine seasons with the Red Sox, Ortiz has hit.289 with a .387 OBP, .570 slugging mark, 320 homers and 1,028 RBI.
