According to a Tweet from the New York Post's Joel Sherman, there is a growing sentiment that the Red Sox may allow general manager Theo Epstein to talk to the Cubs about their vacant GM position.
Wrote Sherman on Twitter: [1] 'I am shocked, but in last 36 hrs every exec talk to says believe #Redsox will give permssion and Theo will go to #Cubs to be GM'
During the Sox' press conference Friday night, the team's ownership group addressed the subject of the Cubs and Epstein, who still has one year remaining on his current contract.
"We're not prepared to answer that question here," said Red Sox president Larry Lucchino. "This is a press conference about the contributions that Tito [Francona] has made to this franchise. Besides, Theo is under contract with us, so it is an issue that has not been addressed or discussed."
Sox chairman Tom Werner than added, "I think we feel collectively that he has been one of the best general managers in baseball and has been integral to the success of our club the last 10 years."
