FOXBORO -- With the departure of linebacker A.J. Edds to the Indianapolis Colts, the Patriots filled his practice squad spot on Wednesday by bringing back defensive end Alex Silvestro and signing the rookie to the practice squad.
Silvestro, 6-feet-3, 267 pounds, was signed by the Patriots as a rookie free agent out of Rutgers on July 27 before being released on Sept. 3. He was in the final round of cuts with defensive lineman Gerard Warren, who was also brought back this week. Silvestro began his career at Rutgers as a linebacker before moving to defensive end and defensive tackle. As a senior in 2010, he had 56 total tackles, 14.5 for a loss, and 4.5 sacks.
The Colts placed safety Melvin Bullitt on injured reserve this week, prompting the move to sign Edds off of the Patriots practice squad.
