Jacoby Ellsbury led off the seventh inning with an infield single against Rays starter Matt Garza. The hit gave the Red Sox their first baserunner of the game. Prior to that, the Rays right-hander had retired the first 18 Red Sox in order over the first six innings, striking out eight Sox hitters in the process.
Boston starter Josh Beckett, meanwhile, was pulled from the game with two outs in the fifth, having allowed 10 hits and seven runs. It is the second straight outing in which Beckett has allowed at least 10 hits and seven runs.
