Former Celtics shooting guard and unrestricted NBA free agent Von Wafer has agreed to play for Italian club Venoli Cremona, his agent told ESPN.com. The deal reportedly includes an opt-out clause that allows Wafer to return to the Celtics or any other NBA suitor once the lockout comes to an end.
Two years ago, Wafer signed a one-year, $1.8 million deal with Greek club Olympiacos but played just a handful of games before reportedly clashing with the team's coaches. This year, he will be playing in the same Italian league (Serie A) as Celtics second-round draft choice E'Twaun Moore, who recently inked a similar deal with Benetton Treviso.
Wafer's agent Terrance Doyle, who also shopped his client to Spanish club Real Madrid [1] to no avail, indicated to ESPN.com that his client "would love to be back" in Boston for the 2011-12 season. Wafer averaged 3.2 points on just 42.1 percent shooting (26.9 percent from 3-point range) over 9.5 minutes in 58 games for the Celtics, his sixth team in as many NBA seasons.
