NEW YORK -- Red Sox reliever Rich Hill will undergo Tommy John surgery to repair a torn ligament in his left armThursday in Pensacola, Fla., with Dr. James Andrews performing the procedure. Starter Daisuke Matsuzaka will also have Tommy John surgery, with his operation scheduled to be performed by Dr. Lewis Yocum Friday.
Hill appeared in nine games for the Sox in 2011, allowing no runs and just three hits while striking out 12 and walking three in eight innings. The lefty hadn't allowed a run in 15 games with the Red Sox since joining the team in '10.
A native of Milton, Hill experienced his injury May 29 while pitching to Chicago's Adam Dunn. The hurler immediately grabbed his elbow after throwing a curveball -- his seventh pitch of the outing -- leading to an MRI being performed on the 31-year-old later that day.
Matsuzaka finishes '11 with a 3-3 mark and a 5.30 ERA. He pitched in eight games, with his last appearance coming on May 16.
