Red Sox manager Terry Francona announced prior to his team's game against the Orioles Tuesday that Daisuke Matsuzaka underwent an MRI earlier in the day due to concerns regarding his right elbow. Results of the procedure would not be available prior to first pitch.
"We're talking about his elbow, whether it's sore or whether he's afraid to get to a point where it's sore," Francona said.
The concern revolving around Matsuzaka has not yet resulted in a roster move, although the Red Sox manager said the team was ready to move "expeditiously" if one needs to be made.
Francona expressed concerns after Matsuzaka allowed five runs on five hits and five walks over 4 1/3 innings Monday night against the Orioles, saying after the Sox' win, "I didn’t think he was letting [his pitches] go. We’ll sit and talk. He didn’t seem completely right, his arm speed, getting extended [in making pitches]."
