WEEI to Honor boston’s top sports whiners on JUNE 25th at Patriot Place’s Showcase Live
BOSTON (April 16, 2009) – The WEEI Sports Radio Network will hold the 7th annual Whiney Awards with Glenn Ordway on Thursday, June 25, 2009 at 8:00 p.m. This year’s event will be held at the new Showcase Live entertainment venue at Patriot Place, adjacent to Gillette Stadium.
Tickets will cost $40 and go on sale to WEEI Clubhouse Insiders on Thursday, April 23rd at 2 PM. Tickets for the general public will go on sale Friday April 24th 2 PM. They can be purchased at weei.com, and are expected to sell out quickly.
“National Amusements is delighted to host the 7th Annual Whiney Awards at Showcase Live,” said Scott Bernstein, Vice President of Global Marketing for National Amusements. “By bringing this tradition to our first class entertainment venue, we’re confident Glenn Ordway and the WEEI listeners will have a truly memorable experience.”
The “Whiney’s” were introduced in 2003 to honor the top callers to WEEI’s popular Whiner Line - a hotline for listeners to whine, joke and vent their frustrations about the sports happenings of the day. Whines range from musical ditties to impersonations of local sports celebrities and media personalities. The Whiner Line airs daily at 5:45 PM on “The Big Show” with Glenn Ordway.
The popularity of both the whiner line and the Whiney Awards has catapulted over the past several years. The inaugural event was attended by 150 people, it then moved to the Copley Marriott, the TD Banknorth Garden, and last year, at the Citi Performing Arts Center Wang Theater.
“The Whiner Line is the signature segment of the Big Show and has been the most popular 15 minutes in Boston radio for years,” said Jason Wolfe VP AM Programming Entercom New England. “Our listeners have been such an incredible part of the growth of this event, we thank them for their tremendous contributions and are excited to honor them again this year.”
“It’s been phenomenal to watch this event grow over the years and we’re thrilled to bring it to Showcase Live later this spring,” said Ordway. “As always, we expect to have a lot of laughs and some great surprise guests.”
Comedian Tony V will emcee the Oscar-style ceremony for the sixth consecutive year. He will be joined by the entire WEEI on-air cast, as well as many of Boston’s top sports reporters and special celebrity guests.
