It doesn't take all that long to realize that Bruins interim head coach Bruce Cassidy has basically become the team’s version of the cool stepdad you saw in any 90s movie. After the totalitarian style of Claude Julien seemingly wore thin on the club’s key pieces in recent years, the breath of fresh air that came with Cassidy had an instant impact on the team. The B’s started the Cassidy Era with four straight victories and wins in 12 of 15 games, and everything seemed to be just wonderful. Cassidy still demanded a lot from this team, and was riding the club hard in practices (the pro athlete way of saying that their chores remained the same -- or actually increased -- on a day-to-day basis), sure, but the team was loose for perhaps the first time all season. That largely seemed to be a direct result of Cassidy letting his players play to their strengths, and reinvigorate their games with a fun, up-tempo style that hearkens back to many of the players’ early paths to

Monday night was more than uncomfortable for the Bruins and their fans. In fact, their 4-2 loss in Toronto was probably one serious injury short of being everything the Bruins did not need to start this incredibly crucial week featuring four games in six nights. And it looked like everything that kept this team out of an 83rd game in back-to-back seasons. For 57 minutes, the Bruins hung with the Maple Leafs. It wasn’t the prettiest of games from some of the B’s best talents, but there was a definite playoff-esque pace to their play. They were able to match what the Leafs threw at them and vice versa, and the playoff feel of the Air Canada Centre was there with every shot just wide and check finished. (Sidenote: The atmosphere of the ACC has long been complete and total garbage according to many players, who have blamed it on the lower bowl’s corporate atmosphere, so to hear it bumping on Monday and not its usual museum quiet was a great sign as to what’s happening

With 11 games left in the 2015 season, the Bruins went on a 5-3-3 ‘slide’ of sorts to end the season, and took their own fate out of their hands with a three-game losing streak to close out their season. They finished in ninth place that year and were denied a playoff spot. With 11 games left in the 2016 season, the Bruins embarked on a skid that started with a four-game losing streak and the club went on to win just three more games before the season came to a close. They finished that year in ninth place and straight-up gagged their way out of a postseason berth for the second straight season. And with 11 games left in their 2017 season, the Bruins begin their most important week of the year. Of course they do. It starts tonight against the Maple Leafs. The Maple Leafs are just three points behind the Bruins for third place in the Atlantic Division and have a game in hand over the club. The Leafs, by the way, have won all three prior head-to-heads with the B’s and have

If Milan Lucic had it his way, he would have worn a Bruins jersey for his entire NHL career and not the Edmonton crest he'll sport for six more years after this one comes to a close. But that decision was not up to him, and that hope was moved to Hollywood quicker than a ‘Fast and Furious’ sequel when he was traded to the Kings at the 2015 NHL draft for goaltender Martin Jones, prospect Colin Miller, and a first-round pick in that year’s draft (which was used to nab Jakub Zboril). Given the fact that Lucic went on to spend just one season in L.A. while the trade has grown another tree for the Bruins -- Jones was shipped to the Sharks in exchange for prospect Sean Kuraly and a 2016 first-round draft pick used on Trent Frederic (15 goals and 33 points in 28 games as a freshman at the University of Wisconsin this year) -- the trade should go down as one of then-rookie general manager Don Sweeney’s best. It was the perfect sell of a free agent to be, and one that helped
