About Scott McLaughlin

Scott McLaughlin interned at WEEI.com in 2011, and two years later they realized they missed him and hired him full-time. Scott spent those two years wandering from rink to rink while writing for Inside Hockey and College Hockey News. His work has also appeared on NESN.com and FOXSports.com and in the Worcester Telegram & Gazette and Christian Science Monitor. Scott graduated from Boston University and sometimes stares longingly at his old dorm from the WEEI offices.

For those who have been following their growth, it's been evident for a while that hockey's advanced stats are here to stay. They've provided us with a new way to watch and analyze the game. They've quantified ideas that previously couldn't be quantified. And they've proven to be a better predictor of future success than anything else that's available. If anyone still needed to be convinced that they're here to stay, this summer should do the trick. In June, the Devils hired former stats blogger Sunny Mehta as their new director of analytics and the Bruins promoted Ryan Nadeau to director of hockey operations/analytics. In mid-July, Eric Tulsky -- who has consistently pushed hockey analytics forward through his blogging for Broad Street Hockey and SB Nation -- announced he had been hired part-time by a still-unnamed NHL team. A week later, the Maple Leafs hired Kyle Dubas as their new assistant general manager. The 28-year-old has been called the Theo Epstein of hockey, and he spent the

Jack Eichel is trying not to think about it too much. The North Chelmsford native could be the first overall pick in the 2015 NHL draft. He could be the first American to go No. 1 since Patrick Kane in 2007. He could be the first Massachusetts native to go No. 1 since Rick DiPietro in 2000. "Obviously I want to be the No. 1 pick. It's a dream of mine. It's a goal of mine. But I really try not to think about the draft too much because it can get to your head," Eichel said after a recent workout at Boston University's Agganis Arena, his home for the 2014-15 season. The hype surrounding his mini-rivalry with Ontario's Connor McDavid -- his competition for next year's top pick -- is well on its way to Taylor Hall vs. Tyler Seguin levels. Some are saying they'll be the best 1-2 since Alex Ovechkin and Evgeni Malkin back in 2004. "I don't really consider it a one-on-one rivalry," Eichel said. "People are always talking, but you really can't think about stuff like that.

There are lots of rivalries in sports, but how many of them actually involve real hatred? No, not hatred between the fanbases. Not fans of one team hating the other team's star player. But players hating each other, criticizing each other, mocking each other, really trying to get under each other's skin. There aren't many, but Bruins-Canadiens is certainly one. We already knew that, but these last two weeks offered a crystal-clear reminder. Shawn Thornton squirted P.K. Subban with water. Subban and Zdeno Chara exchanged crosschecks. Andrei Markov speared Chara in the groin. Milan Lucic speared Alexei Emelin in the chest. Dale Weise mocked the Bruins' goal celebration. Lucic mocked Subban by flexing his muscles. Brad Marchand gave Tomas Plekanec a jab to the head when the refs weren’t looking. The Canadiens complained about the Bruins being disrespectful. Lucic talked trash in the handshake line. Weise complained about that. Lucic called Weise a baby. It was all so dumb and

If you've been following the Bruins this postseason, you're probably aware that their top line has struggled to score goals. Most notably, David Krejci has zero goals and just three assists through 11 playoff games this year -- yes, the same David Krejci who led the NHL in playoff scoring in both 2011 and 2013. The line as a whole has yet to score a 5-on-5 goal in the Bruins' second-round series against Montreal. Its last such goal came eight games ago when Jarome Iginla tipped in the overtime winner in Game 4 vs. Detroit. Since then, Milan Lucic has scored two goals (none in the last four games), but one came during a line change with Carl Soderberg at center and the other was an empty-netter. Iginla has scored three, but one was an empty-netter, one came with an extra attacker on for the B's, and one came on the power play. So why is this line struggling so much? Are they getting outplayed? Are they not generating enough chances? Are they just unlucky? Let's try to answer these one at a
