About Scott McLaughlin

Scott McLaughlin interned at WEEI.com in 2011, and two years later they realized they missed him and hired him full-time. Scott spent those two years wandering from rink to rink while writing for Inside Hockey and College Hockey News. His work has also appeared on NESN.com and FOXSports.com and in the Worcester Telegram & Gazette and Christian Science Monitor. Scott graduated from Boston University and sometimes stares longingly at his old dorm from the WEEI offices.

In case you haven't heard, the Beanpot has become pretty predictable. It's been 23 years since someone other than Boston College or Boston University won it. Of the 16 years during that span that a BC-BU final was a possibility, we've gotten a BC-BU final in 11 of them, including this year. Ryan Lambert of Yahoo! Sports and College Hockey News and Andy Merritt of the New England Hockey Journal came up with an interesting idea to "fix" the Beanpot, and since Ryan put it into writing, I think it's worth responding to. You can read the plan here, but the crux of it is this: a Champions League-style tournament featuring 16 New England college hockey teams that would be played throughout the season, culminating with the semifinals and final at TD Garden on the first two Mondays of February, the traditional Beanpot dates. I like Ryan and Andy. They're smart and they both know a lot about the local college hockey scene. They've both been guests on my podcast and I consider them

The concerns over Tuukka Rask earlier this season were, for the most part, overblown. Yes, he was playing poorly. But the idea that he was going to continue to play that poorly was preposterous. Rask is one of the best goalies in the world and has been for his entire career. Did you know he has the best career save percentage in history among goalies who have played at least 250 games? Well, he does. He didn't just suddenly forget how to be a really good goalie. He hit a rough patch. Every goalie does from time to time. In fact, Rask himself had gone through stretches just like that in previous seasons. He got off to a bad start last season as well (.899 save percentage through the first eight games) and still ended up with a .922 save percentage, which was good enough to rank in the top 10 in the NHL. The year before he hit a midseason slump that saw him go .899 over a 14-game stretch, yet he still finished that season at .930 and won the Vezina Trophy. So yes, Rask's .890 save

The Bruins currently lead the NHL in scoring with 3.90 goals per game. Whether they continue to lead the NHL in scoring over the long run remains to be seen, but they definitely won't continue to score nearly four goals per game. See, the Bruins offense is going to regress. We know this because we know what kinds of shooting percentages are sustainable, and the Bruins currently have a lot that aren't. For starters, the Bruins have a team shooting percentage of 13.1 percent in all situations. Not only is that tops in the NHL, but it's 1 1/2 points higher than any team who isn't the Canadiens (whose 12.6 percent and 3.85 goals per game aren't sustainable either). To put that in perspective, the league leaders in team shooting percentage are usually in the 10-11 percent range. The highest mark over the last five 82-game seasons was the 2009-10 Washington Capitals at 11.6 percent. At the individual level, a lot of Bruins are shooting well above their career shooting percentages. David Krejci

"I'm not sure for us there is any need for any code of conduct other than our players, who overwhelmingly conduct themselves magnificently off the ice -- we deal with it on a case-by-case basis. I don't think we need to formalize anything more. Our players know what's right and wrong, and as I said, we have the mechanisms in place to hopefully not get to that point." -- Gary Bettman, Oct. 8, 2014 In the midst of the NFL's disastrous handling of numerous domestic violence cases involving star players, NHL commissioner Gary Bettman had the gall to tell everyone why his league was different. Well, guess what, Gary? Your league isn't different, your players and teams don't all know what's right and wrong, and things have gotten to "that point." If anyone still needed convincing, Thursday should have done the trick. For some inexplicable reason, the defending Stanley Cup champion Blackhawks decided to roll out Patrick Kane for a press conference while the superstar
