About Scott McLaughlin

Scott McLaughlin interned at WEEI.com in 2011, and two years later they realized they missed him and hired him full-time. Scott spent those two years wandering from rink to rink while writing for Inside Hockey and College Hockey News. His work has also appeared on NESN.com and FOXSports.com and in the Worcester Telegram & Gazette and Christian Science Monitor. Scott graduated from Boston University and sometimes stares longingly at his old dorm from the WEEI offices.

For the most part, Peter Chiarelli was a pretty good general manager. You don’t build a team that wins one Stanley Cup and reaches another Cup final by being a bad one. But Chiarelli did make mistakes. He traded one of the game’s best young forwards for a subpar return, a deal that continues to look worse as Tyler Seguin competes for scoring titles while the Bruins struggle to find scoring wingers. He also overpaid replaceable depth players, something that contributed to the Bruins’ salary cap issues. Don Sweeney apparently did not learn from those mistakes. In one day, he committed both of them. He traded Dougie Hamilton, who is already a bona fide top-pairing defenseman at age 22, for an underwhelming package of picks that is unlikely to produce a player who comes anywhere close to being as impactful as Hamilton. Then he signed Adam McQuaid -- a replaceable, injury-prone sixth defenseman with little upside at this point in his career -- to a four-year deal that will

Peter Chiarelli made two solid trades Monday. Brett Connolly should be able to play in the top nine, and maybe the top six, and Max Talbot improves the fourth line. Neither is a rental, and Chiarelli didn't have to give up anything all that significant to get them (two second-round picks is a little steep for Connolly, but it's far from crazy). Yet Chiarelli still lost at this deadline. All the talk leading up to the deadline was whether the Bruins were going for it this year or looking to the future. The deadline has come and gone, and they're still stuck somewhere in between. Connolly and Talbot help the Bruins both this year and next year assuming they sign Connolly, who will be a restricted free agent. But those two aren't big enough difference-makers to change the Bruins' course in any significant way. If the Bruins really wanted to give themselves a shot to make a deep playoff run this season, they needed to add a top-four defenseman or something very close to it. The Bruins

A lot of things that have happened with the Bruins this year would have been hard to predict before the season. One thing that was easy to predict was Dougie Hamilton taking another step forward in his development and really solidifying himself as a top-pairing defenseman (you could argue he actually did that last year, but nonetheless more progress was expected). Sure enough, Hamilton is doing just that. He’s playing more minutes than last year, he’s being used in tougher situations, he’s driving possession more, he’s shooting the puck more, and he’s on a better points per game pace. As far as stuff that doesn’t show up in stats, he also looks stronger in the corners and in front of the net. Even when he was without usual defensive partner inZdeno Chara for 19 games, Hamilton was still putting up strong possession numbers, proving his success is not just a product of playing with Chara. The 21-year-old Hamilton is having such a good season that we can

Zdeno Chara and Tom Brady have a lot in common. They're both 37, they're both leaders of their teams, they've both been the best player at their position throughout their time playing here and they're both heading straight to the Hall of Fame once they retire. Over the last year, they've had something else in common: They've been counted out before there was anywhere close to enough evidence to do so. Brady was considered by some to be in "serious decline" after four subpar games to start this season, but once his offensive line started to improve, it became pretty evident that those declarations were premature. The same thing has been happening with Chara. It started last spring when, for the second straight postseason, Chara suffered an injury and finished the playoffs at less than 100 percent -- probably a lot less. Despite the fact that his injury in that Canadiens series was a freak one that came on a slash that would've injured anyone, some people chose to view it as a sign
