About Scott McLaughlin

Scott McLaughlin interned at WEEI.com in 2011, and two years later they realized they missed him and hired him full-time. Scott spent those two years wandering from rink to rink while writing for Inside Hockey and College Hockey News. His work has also appeared on NESN.com and FOXSports.com and in the Worcester Telegram & Gazette and Christian Science Monitor. Scott graduated from Boston University and sometimes stares longingly at his old dorm from the WEEI offices.

To state the obvious, the Bruins totally dominated Winnipeg Saturday night. They won 4-1 and outshot the Jets 38-12, including an astounding 29-5 margin at 5-on-5. It was the fewest shots on goal allowed by the Bruins since 2001. The B’s won’t have too many more games like that because, well, no one has too many games like that. But their complete command of the game presents an opportunity to look at the fact that strong puck possession in general is not a one-off occurrence for this year’s team. These Bruins have been not just a good possession team, but one of the best in the NHL. They currently rank second in the NHL in Corsi at 53.81 percent, trailing only the Blues, with Saturday’s effort moving them just ahead of the perennial Corsi Kings from LA. That’s a pretty significant turnaround from last season when they were 17th at 49.55 percent. The biggest improvement has come on defense, where the B’s have lowered their shots on goal allowed per game

The San Jose Sharks are going to the Stanley CupFinal and Joe Thornton is one of the biggest reasons why. The most common narrative will be that they have finally broken through after a decade-plus of postseason failure. That criticism may fit the Sharks as an organization. They have had many really good teams over the years but this is, in fact, their first trip to the Cup Final. It most certainly does not fit Thornton, though. This is not a turnaround for him. It’s not some late-career breakthrough. He hasn’t suddenly learned how to win. What Thornton has done this spring is the same thing he has done pretty much every year throughout his Hall of Fame career. He’s played really well, controlled play and put up points -- 18 in 18 games, tying him for fifth in playoff scoring this year. The idea that Thornton is a great regular-season player who comes up short in the playoffs has never been fair, or accurate. We know where it started -- 2004 in Boston. That’s the

No one has ever questioned Jim Madigan's love of Northeastern University and its hockey program. He played there from 1981-85 and has worked for the school in one capacity or another since 1986. What some people -- media and fans alike -- have questioned, however, is whether Madigan is the right guy to be the team’s head coach. The questions started right from the moment Madigan was hired in July 2011. Although he had been a scout for the New York Islanders and then the Pittsburgh Penguins for the previous 18 years, he had never been a head coach and hadn't been behind the bench at all since 1993 when he was an assistant coach at his alma mater. Did he really have what it takes to be a Division I head coach? The fact that the Huskies missed the Hockey East playoffs in each of Madigan's first two seasons as head coach didn't help, especially considering what two other Hockey East coaches hired the same summer as Madigan -- UMass Lowell's Norm Bazin and Providence's Nate Leaman -- did

Patrice Bergeron should be a lock to win his fourth Selke Trophy in the last five years. He remains the best defensive forward in the NHL by pretty much every measure, and it’s really not even that close. He’s second in the league in relative Corsi, and he’s doing it while facing opponents’ top lines every night, starting far more shifts in the defensive zone than the offensive zone, and playing in front of a defense that isn’t exactly loaded with good puck-movers. Simply put, he drives possession and flips the ice better than anyone in the NHL. Bergeron is such a clear-cut frontrunner that the most interesting Selke discussion from a Bruins perspective isn’t whether Bergeron will win the award. It’s whether the Bruins will have two of the three Selke finalists, because Brad Marchand and Loui Eriksson both deserve consideration. Now, you may be wondering how a team that ranks 19th in the NHL in team defense could possibly have three Selke
