Tuukka Rask has been bad this season. It's OK to acknowledge that. Yes, the defense in front of him has been decimated by the Johnny Boychuk trade and injuries to Zdeno Chara, Kevan Miller and now Torey Krug. Yes, there have been defensive breakdowns that have led to quality scoring chances for opponents. But Rask has made all of that worse by playing poorly himself. Defensive struggles alone don't explain his .899 save percentage, a 31-point drop from last season that places him 34th out of 43 goalies who have made at least three starts this year. Goalies on bad defensive teams can still have good save percentages. Semyon Varlamov had a .927 save percentage last season for a Colorado team that was pretty bad defensively. Jonathan Bernier went .923 behind a terrible Toronto defense, and Ryan Miller had the same .923 mark behind a similarly terrible Buffalo team before getting traded to St. Louis. And it's not like those teams were just giving up a lot of shots from the outside.

It might be tempting to think some good came from all of Monday's ugliness. Some have praised TMZ for unearthing the damning in-elevator video that answered any and all questions about what happened between Ray Rice and his then-fiancee on Feb. 15. Some said "better late than never" after the Ravens released Rice and the NFL suspended him indefinitely. In reality, nothing good happened Monday. The Ravens and the NFL didn't take action because the video was some alarming revelation, or because they realized the error of their ways. They acted because they had no other option. When they did have options, the Ravens and the NFL chose to side with Rice. Instead of doing everything in their power to figure out how Janay Palmer ended up unconscious in that elevator, instead of suspending Rice indefinitely and waiting to see if more evidence surfaced, the Ravens jumped to Rice's defense, as if he were somehow the victim here. They put Rice and Palmer together in an embarrassing press

For those who have been following their growth, it's been evident for a while that hockey's advanced stats are here to stay. They've provided us with a new way to watch and analyze the game. They've quantified ideas that previously couldn't be quantified. And they've proven to be a better predictor of future success than anything else that's available. If anyone still needed to be convinced that they're here to stay, this summer should do the trick. In June, the Devils hired former stats blogger Sunny Mehta as their new director of analytics and the Bruins promoted Ryan Nadeau to director of hockey operations/analytics. In mid-July, Eric Tulsky -- who has consistently pushed hockey analytics forward through his blogging for Broad Street Hockey and SB Nation -- announced he had been hired part-time by a still-unnamed NHL team. A week later, the Maple Leafs hired Kyle Dubas as their new assistant general manager. The 28-year-old has been called the Theo Epstein of hockey, and he spent the

Jack Eichel is trying not to think about it too much. The North Chelmsford native could be the first overall pick in the 2015 NHL draft. He could be the first American to go No. 1 since Patrick Kane in 2007. He could be the first Massachusetts native to go No. 1 since Rick DiPietro in 2000. "Obviously I want to be the No. 1 pick. It's a dream of mine. It's a goal of mine. But I really try not to think about the draft too much because it can get to your head," Eichel said after a recent workout at Boston University's Agganis Arena, his home for the 2014-15 season. The hype surrounding his mini-rivalry with Ontario's Connor McDavid -- his competition for next year's top pick -- is well on its way to Taylor Hall vs. Tyler Seguin levels. Some are saying they'll be the best 1-2 since Alex Ovechkin and Evgeni Malkin back in 2004. "I don't really consider it a one-on-one rivalry," Eichel said. "People are always talking, but you really can't think about stuff like that.
