About Carlson Mozdiez

Carlson Mozdiez, a Holliston native, has followed the New England sports scene his entire life — to the brink of obsession. Carlson has been at WEEI for seven years, serving as the WEEI.com content manager since the spring of 2007. His career has run parallel with the “Golden Age" of Boston sports, as he has attended and covered three Patriots Super Bowls, two Red Sox World Series and the Celtics' 2008 NBA championship. Mozdiez, a 2002 graduate of Syracuse University, now resides in Watertown.

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. — The first shoe drops. With the trading deadline five days away, the Red Sox made their first trade of a prospective free agent, sending right-hander Jake Peavy to the Giants. Multiple industry sources confirmed that there was an agreement to send Peavy to San Francisco pending approval from the Commissioner’s Office. The Red Sox will pick up just over half of Peavy’s remaining salary, which had roughly $5 million left. Jon Heyman of CBSSports.com first reported the completion of the deal; Jen Royle of the Boston Herald first reported on Saturday morning that Peavy was close to being dealt. In 20 starts this year, Peavy is 1-9 with a 4.72 ERA while averaging roughly 6 1/3 innings per outing. He’s averaging 7.3 strikeouts per nine innings — a solid rate, but his lowest since 2003 — and 3.3 walks per nine (again, his worst rate since 2003). Yet both of those numbers, even as they reflect a declining arsenal, offer a viable baseline

The Red Sox have promoted both outfielder Jackie Bradley and pitcher Brandon Workman from Triple-A Pawtucket, sending pitcher Jose De La Torre back to the PawSox while putting reliever Alex Wilson on the 15-day disabled list (thumb). Bradley is hitting .297 with Pawtucket, owning seven home runs and a .922 OPS. For July, the outfielder has a 1.046 OPS to go along with a .250 batting average. The 23-year-old last played in the majors on June 5, having totaled 19 big league games this season. This is Workman’s first appearance in the majors, having been taken in the second round of the 2010 amateur draft. Since being promoted to Pawtucket, the righty has gone 3-1 with a 2.80 ERA over six starts, striking out 34 in 35 1/3 innings. He does have some experience as a reliever at the University of Texas (as was pointed out by Red Sox assistant general manager Mike Hazen on The Bradford Files Podcast.) Former Bruins player and coach and current television analyst Mike Milbury will not face any charges stemming from a December 9th incident at a youth hockey game in Brookline, according to multiple reports. A Boston Herald report states that a spokeswoman for Milbury said a clerk magistrate at Brookline District Court ruled there wasn't enough evidence to move ahead with the case. After the decision, Milbury said the incident was “an unfortunate misunderstanding.” Milbury, a Massachusetts native, played for the Bruins from 1975-76 through 1986-87. He coached the Bruins for two seasons, guiding them to the Stanley Cup finals in 1990, his first season at the helm.
