FARMINGDALE, N.Y. – Ricky Barnes and Lucas Glover in the final pairing of the U.S. Open? It’s a storyline that looked as plausible at the beginning of the week at Bethpage Black as the grounds crew having to syringe the greens between groups just to keep them moist. Nonetheless, that was indeed the case when the two teed off Sunday evening in this disjointed Open that has seemingly squeezed starting times into every possible slot on your watch. After playing just one hole in the fourth round Sunday evening, the unlikely duo will be the last ones on the course whenever this epic contest is completed. Dressed in plaid pants and his trademark painter’s cap in Sunday’s third round, it was clear that despite his relative obscurity, the carefree Californian Barnes had been adopted by the raucous (granted, we’re talking golf standards here) galleries at Bethpage. Glover, who opened with a 3-over-par 38 but roared back with three birdies on the way in Sunday, got

There are not too many multimillionaires who will willingly throw themselves into a frothing mosh pit. But give Jared Dudley credit — he wasn’t going to miss the moment. As the hardwood at Conte Forum gave way to a sea of yellow and maroon last night, the rather conspicuous noggin of the 6-foot-7 Phoenix Suns’ forward could be seen bobbing up and down with the rest of the crowd in the wake of Boston College’s momentous 80-74 upset of Duke. It’s safe to say it was not the prescribed mode of celebration the Suns’ brass would have outlined, but Dudley really didn’t seem to care. For that matter, neither did anyone else, as BC authored its second major upset of the year. Led by its self-possessed leader Tyrese Rice (21 points) and a pair of upstart underclassmen in sophomore Joe Trapani (20 points, 7 boards) and freshman Reggie Jackson (15 points off the bench), the Eagles finally put 40 minutes of quality ball into the books. Rice — who went

CHESTNUT HILL – It was a save situation that even Jonathan Papelbon might have taken a pass on, but Frank Spaziani was up for the challenge. Named head coach of the BC football team Jan. 13 after a tumultuous week for the fired Jeff Jagodzinski, Spaziani was not greeted with a honeymoon. Instead, the 61-year-old coach was left staring at a daunting, two-week window to convince all 16 recruits committed to BC that despite reports to the contrary the football program was indeed alive and well at the Heights. Wednesday, on national signing day, Spaziani took to the podium at the Yawkey Center to unveil the fruits of a two week road trip from Conway, NH, to Lithia, FL and countless towns in between. The good news? Spaziani accomplished what he set out to do and officially inked all 16 players. The bad news? Most recruiting analysts rank this year’s BC recruiting class as mediocre at best. OK, let’s get this one straight: Team A shocks Team B, but while bathing in the all too short afterglow of its historic win is subsequently shocked by nearby Team C three days later. Undefeated, but still looking for national respect, Team D then upsets Team B at home, but leaves itself wide open for a potential letdown against the aforementioned Team A three days later on the road as it (you guessed it) bathes in the all too short afterglow of its momentous win. Break the code and win a free Dick Vitale bobble head -- and two tickets to tonight’s huge ACC showdown at the Heights where No. 2 ranked Wake Forest (Team D for those of you scoring at home) invades Conte Forum to take on the previously 17th ranked Eagles, or, Team A (9 p.m., Channel 38 ). Throw the alphabet soup aside and Boston College has to hope the hangover from the Demon Deacons’ impressive 92-89 win over UNC Sunday is as potent as the one they suffered a week ago when Harvard shocked Al
