About Scott Mclaughlin

Scott McLaughlin interned at WEEI.com in 2011, and two years later they realized they missed him and hired him full-time. Scott spent those two years wandering from rink to rink while writing for Inside Hockey and College Hockey News. His work has also appeared on NESN.com and FOXSports.com and in the Worcester Telegram & Gazette and Christian Science Monitor. Scott graduated from Boston University and sometimes stares longingly at his old dorm from the WEEI offices.

It might be tempting to think some good came from all of Monday's ugliness.

For those who have been following their growth, it's been evident for a while that hockey's advanced stats are here to stay. They've provided us with a new way to watch and analyze the game. They've quantified ideas that previously couldn't be quantified. And they've proven to be a better predictor of future success than anything else that's available.

Jack Eichel is trying not to think about it too much.

There are lots of rivalries in sports, but how many of them actually involve real hatred? No, not hatred between the fanbases. Not fans of one team hating the other team's star player. But players hating each other, criticizing each other, mocking each other, really trying to get under each other's skin.

If you've been following the Bruins this postseason, you're probably aware that their top line has struggled to score goals.

04/05/2014 - 6:19pm
It’s already being called his best game as a Bruin, and rightly so. Playing on the top line in place of a banged-up Jarome Iginla, Loui Eriksson registered a career-high four assists and a game-high seven shots on goal (which is also a season high for him) in the Bruins’ 5-2 win over the Flyers Saturday afternoon.

Zdeno Chara turned 37 on Tuesday, and he’s still one of the best defensemen in the NHL. Considering how long he’s been one of the best, it’s kind of amazing that he’s only won one Norris Trophy (in 2009).
Scott McLaughlin
03/09/2014 - 10:40pm
So, the Bruins didn’t get a sure-fire top-four defenseman at the trade deadline. We all know they could’ve used one. But did they need one? Is their top four a weakness?
Scott McLaughlin
03/03/2014 - 12:09am
If you’re a Bruins fan, you’ve heard the debate a hundred times since Dennis Seidenberg went down with a torn ACL and MCL on Dec. 27. Should the Bruins pony up to acquire a top-four defenseman before the trade deadline? Can they win the Stanley Cup if they don’t?

Let’s not sugarcoat this. Missing the podium is a major disappointment for the United States men’s hockey team.

The men's Olympic hockey tournament gets started on Wednesday, with Team USA opening group play on Thursday at 7:30 a.m. ET against Zdeno Chara and Slovakia. The Americans will then face host Russia on Saturday morning before closing out group play against Slovenia on Sunday.

A month ago, it would have been easy to understand if Chad Johnson was lacking confidence. He hadn't played much during the first two months of the season, and when he finally got more playing time in mid-December, he struggled in back-to-back games and gave up a pair of soft wraparound goals.
Scott McLaughlin
12/14/2013 - 12:09pm
Most coaches would kill to have the kind of success Alain Vigneault had in Vancouver. Six division titles, two Presidents' Trophies, four trips out of the first round and a Stanley Cup Final appearance.
Scott McLaughlin
11/20/2013 - 7:13am
Before the season, it would have been crazy to even mention the possibility. In some ways, it still is. But when a player makes you jump out of your seat as much as Torey Krug does, it's only natural to wonder, and some around Boston have started to do just that. Could Krug make the U.S. Olympic team? Should he at least be considered?
Scott McLaughlin
11/18/2013 - 12:00am
If you had to describe the Bruins' season to this point, you'd probably say something like "good but not great." Given the fact that in the last month the Bruins have gone from winning four straight to losing four of five to winning four straight to collapsing against Ottawa in their most recent game, the word "inconsistent" might come to mind.

11/08/2013 - 12:23am
The voices opposed to fighting in hockey are getting louder and louder. Earlier this season, three NHL general managers, including Hall of Famer Steve Yzerman, went on record as saying it was time for the NHL to take steps toward eliminating fighting.

As the second period of Thursday night's game against the Avalanche came to an end, the Bruins were hoping to carry some momentum into the break.
