There were plenty of doubters in Fenway Park Sunday night. The circumstances -- down by four runs in the eighth inning of a game hardly soaked in optimism for the hosts -- nurtured such skepticism. Surely, then, the players felt the same creeping uncertainty?

For the players, it’s not the priority. Winning is. But in the downtime -- when strategy and analysis are put on pause -- the conversations regarding how the postseason might affect the free agent market do, indeed, surface. What do these playoff performances mean to the price tags?

"I said it from Jump Street, I’m not going to go out there and do something that’s going to cost me the rest of the season. I want to be 100 percent the next time I get on a mound, so that’s what I’m going to do." -- Clay Buchholz the day before the All-Star Game

TORONTO -- During most postgame media sessions, Red Sox manager John Farrell will turn a specific question into some sort of synopsis for what transpired throughout the entire game. Tuesday night was no different.

KANSAS CITY -- Blanche Peavy's experience when it came to hitting a ball with a bat boiled down to some sandlot baseball, and a little late-in-life fast-pitch softball. That didn't matter to his grandson. Jake Peavy always turned to his 'Paw Paw' in times of need.

KANSAS CITY -- It was just one of a clubhouse full of ice packs wandering throughout the Red Sox' clubhouse Friday night after their 9-6 loss to the Royals. But Shane Victorino's bandages perhaps best represented the current plight of this team.

The game of the year was punctuated with perhaps the quote of the year. "In a word," said Red Sox manager John Farrell upon arriving for his postgame media session Thursday night, "magical."

In what is shaping up as at least a semi-fascinating final few days of July, it represents perhaps the most interesting question for the Red Sox heading toward the non-waiver trade deadline. What are they going to do at third base?

The first time the mention of a contract extension surfaced from Dustin Pedroia was during a mid-August swing through Kansas City in the midst of the 2011 season, during a dinner with his agents from ACES. Almost two years later, it's no longer just talk.
