Two seasons ago, they were two of the best in the business. One struck out 73 batters in 70 innings, limiting opponents to a .179 batting average and .546 OPS while throwing 561 of his 743 fastballs at 97 mph or better. That pitcher's name was Daniel Bard.

In the myriad Red Sox press conferences this offseason, the question has been thrown Ben Cherington's way on almost every occasion. "Can you contend for a playoff spot in 2013?"

It's all coming back to J.D Drew. There's Monday's news that his brother, Stephen Drew, is coming to Boston, agreeing to a one-year deal to play shortstop for the Red Sox. (A notion J.D. didn't feel comfortable talking about when reached by phone Sunday night.)

NASHVILLE, Tenn. -- This we know: despite Ben Cherington's description of his ideal right fielder, Dwight Evans is not walking through that door. After that, it's anybody's guess who will man the right side of the Red Sox' outfield.

The Red Sox haven't executed the kind of shock-and-awe signings on which some in these parts might be judging their offseason. But what they've done to this point is telling.

10/02/2012 - 3:15am
NEW YORK -- The question was posed to David Ortiz: "Do you think you have a better shot at getting a two-year deal heading into this offseason than at this time last offseason?" It was met with another inquiry.
