About Rob Bradford

Rob Bradford joined WEEI.com after serving as a Red Sox beat writer for the Boston Herald and the Eagle-Tribune (Lawrence, Mass.). Prior to manning the Red Sox beat, he spent several years at the Lowell Sun. He has written two books: “Chasing Steinbrenner,” following the front offices of the Red Sox and Toronto Blue Jays through the 2003 season, and “Deep Drive: A Long Journey to Discovering the Champion Within,” which he co-authored with Red Sox third baseman Mike Lowell.

BALTIMORE -- It's cliche to say nobody deserves the fate the 2011 Red Sox found themselves with. But that's not true. Many, for various reasons, did.

09/28/2011 - 2:07am
BALTIMORE -- Three seasons ago, it was because of a sick pitcher. Wednesday it will be due to an under-the-weather organization. Regardless, Jon Lester has once again been called upon to save the Sox.

09/27/2011 - 9:29am
BALTIMORE -- Do you know the last time the Red Sox won two games in a row? It was exactly one month ago.  All was seemingly right with the then first-place Sox upon completion of that two-game ball of fire, with Terry Francona's team carrying an 8 1/2 game lead on the floundering Rays.

Within the panic, in among the pennant race chaos, stands Adrian Gonzalez.

It was Aug. 17 and the Rays were leaving town having taken two out of three against the Red Sox. Still, reality had seemingly set in for Tampa Bay, which found itself eight games in back of the Sox in the chase for the wild card with 39 games left to play.
Rob Bradford
09/16/2011 - 2:24am
This is the Red Sox' chance. Forget the six straight losses to the Rays. Dismiss the 9-2 defeat at the hands of Tampa Bay Thursday night. And disregard the dwindling lead (now three games) in the Wild Card race. Now, it's all about finally getting off the ropes.

Tim Wakefield knows what he's doing.

The following is a look at where each member of the Red Sox (the same Red Sox who are now just three games ahead of the Rays in the Wild Card race) find themselves heading into the regular season's final 16 games:

TORONTO -- It wasn't exactly smothered with panic, but David Ortiz' comments after the Red Sox' latest loss did offer somewhat of a warning shot.

TORONTO -- Just two years earlier, Marco Scutaro found himself in a similar place to where he landed Tuesday night.

09/06/2011 - 7:59am
TORONTO -- Monday -- the day the Red Sox suffered a 1-0, 11-inning loss to the Blue Jays -- might end up being a memorable moment in this 2011 season. For Sox fans' sake, they better hope that isn't the case.

Conor Jackson's father, John, played Rear Admiral A.J. Chegwidden on the television series "JAG." That's not why the Red Sox acquired Jackson.

It took some time, but Josh Beckett has it all figured out. First, the topic of life after his current contract (which runs through the 2014 season): "I'll probably go year to year, because I don't want to be in any obligations," he said.

ARLINGTON, Texas -- There were no celebrations, and little reflection. The Red Sox were moving on.

ARLINGTON, Texas -- It might have been a revelation for Red Sox followers, but the Carl Crawford of Wednesday night was nothing new to Tim Bogar.

ARLINGTON, Texas -- Can one player carry a team the likes of the Red Sox? Or how about two, or maybe three?

08/23/2011 - 3:32am
ARLINGTON, Texas -- Jarrod Saltalmacchia spoke the truth after the Red Sox' 4-0 loss to the Rangers Monday night. Question: Does this defeat, or the fact that the Rangers have now won all four of their meetings with the Sox this season, mean anything come October?
Rob Bradford
08/22/2011 - 1:51am
ARLINGTON, Texas -- It was one of a flood of introductions Boston had to Erik Bedard, most of which came before the pitcher even set foot down at Logan Airport.

KANSAS CITY -- How can somebody so unpredictable be so predictable? This is the riddle that follows Alfredo Aceves.

The first introduction of Jacoby Ellsbury to Johnny Damon came with then-Red Sox reliever Alan Embree yelling across the Sox clubhouse upon seeing the newly drafted Ellsbury on television.

08/13/2011 - 1:43am
Nobody -- not one person -- was bringing up a rarely-mentioned clause in Dustin Pedroia's contract throughout those first two months of the 2011 season. The reason? He was hitting .239 on June 4, 56 games into his fifth full big league season.
Rob Bradford
08/05/2011 - 1:01am
How is it going to end for Jonathan Papelbon? Where will the closer's career take him after this season? How long will he stay in baseball? His answer: "No idea." Papelbon, however, has locked in one aspect of his future.
Rob Bradford
08/04/2011 - 7:52am
It's hard to figure out where it started for Jacoby Ellsbury.  On his way out of the clubhouse Wednesday night -- about an hour after teammates had given him the celebratory business for a second straight night thanks to a walk-off, ninth-inning homer -- Ellsbury offered a hint.
