It's been almost nine months since that tragic day. The sting of the bombings at the Boston Marathon still lingers. It's a feeling that won't go away, and surely will be brought even closer to the surface when the 2014 race is run.

LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla. -- They all seemed happy. Ashley Saltalamacchia, Jarrod's wife, appeared pleased. As did the couple's three daughters. And the catcher's agent, Jim Munsey, smiled the smile of a man who had pleasantly concluded a month of negotiations.

CC Sabathia. Ivan Nova. David Phelps. Michael Pineda. Adam Warren. Jacoby Ellsbury, here is your new starting rotation.

So far, he has been their most valuable player. Daniel Nava won't win any sort of hardware for earning the title of offseason MVP. Earning honors for your exploits between April and October usually lead to more formal recognition. But don't think for a minute that some very important people haven't taken notice of Nava's contributions thus far this month.

ORLANDO -- The question was asked of one baseball executive amidst the hubbub in the lobby of the J.W. Marriott Grande Lakes at the general managers' meetings Tuesday night. "What would David Ortiz get for a contract if he were a free agent right now?"
Rob Bradford
11/11/2013 - 2:59am
ORLANDO -- Yes, we get it: The general managers' meetings will be setting the stage for this baseball offseason. But, in reality, it could be much, much more than just a warm-up act.

ST. LOUIS -- This wasn't Pedro Martinez, circa 1999 playoffs in Cleveland. Not really even close. In terms of abbreviated excellence, that six inning stint of no-hit relief is the standard-bearer. But it was admirable, just the same.

ST. LOUIS -- You know what these 2013 Red Sox hadn't had? A team meeting.

Jake Peavy has pitched in some notable spots. You throw 31,827 major league pitches, finding yourself in at least a few big-stage moments is almost inevitable. But Peavy has never been faced with what awaits him in St. Louis on Saturday.

Jon Lester didn't want to hear it on that bench in Fort Myers in February.

Jose Oquendo couldn't have known. Same thing goes for J.D. Drew. It was just supposed to be a couple of summers with two brothers hanging out for a few months. One was a big league ballplayer for the St. Louis Cardinals, the other a kid fresh off graduating from Lowndes County (Ga.) High School.

There were plenty of doubters in Fenway Park Sunday night. The circumstances -- down by four runs in the eighth inning of a game hardly soaked in optimism for the hosts -- nurtured such skepticism. Surely, then, the players felt the same creeping uncertainty?

For the players, it’s not the priority. Winning is. But in the downtime -- when strategy and analysis are put on pause -- the conversations regarding how the postseason might affect the free agent market do, indeed, surface. What do these playoff performances mean to the price tags?
