Nobody -- not one person -- was bringing up a rarely-mentioned clause in Dustin Pedroia's contract throughout those first two months of the 2011 season. The reason? He was hitting .239 on June 4, 56 games into his fifth full big league season.

It's hard to figure out where it started for Jacoby Ellsbury.  On his way out of the clubhouse Wednesday night -- about an hour after teammates had given him the celebratory business for a second straight night thanks to a walk-off, ninth-inning homer -- Ellsbury offered a hint.

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. -- The chaos and euphoria that emanated from the Red Sox' clubhouse after a 5-hour, 44-minute, 16-inning, 1-0 win over the Rays was accompanied by plenty of storylines early Monday morning.

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. -- It's debatable what Sunday night (and early Monday morning) will be remembered for.

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. -- Sixteen days. That's what is left until we can officially put the non-waiver trade deadline in the rear-view mirror and shift our focus to waiver claims and cemented rosters for the stretch drive. This is where the roster-building heat starts picking up.

PITTSBURGH -- Alfredo Aceves stopped in his tracks while walking by the media scrum gathered around Andrew Miller after the Red Sox' 4-2 win over the Pirates Sun

PITTSBURGH -- David Ortiz had every right to be somewhat perplexed. When the rain chooses to make its most powerful appearance during a single at-bat -- as was the case when the Sox slugger stepped up to pinch-hit in the eighth inning Friday night -- eyebrow-raising is perfectly acceptable.

Adrian Gonzalez can hit. He fields his position about as well as anybody in the majors. And the 29-year-old’s day-to-day approach appears to be beyond reproach. So, what can’t Gonzalez do?
