About Rob Bradford

Rob Bradford joined WEEI.com after serving as a Red Sox beat writer for the Boston Herald and the Eagle-Tribune (Lawrence, Mass.). Prior to manning the Red Sox beat, he spent several years at the Lowell Sun. He has written two books: “Chasing Steinbrenner,” following the front offices of the Red Sox and Toronto Blue Jays through the 2003 season, and “Deep Drive: A Long Journey to Discovering the Champion Within,” which he co-authored with Red Sox third baseman Mike Lowell.

Will Middlebrooks, and those who have been watching him, might have been blinded by the moment. The third baseman had gone 0-for-5 in the Red Sox' 5-4, 10-inning loss to the Royals on Sunday night. It completed Kansas City's sweep in a doubleheader in which Middlebrooks went 1-for-9.

So, was it worth it? Friday would have marked the moment the Red Sox could have called up Jackie Bradley while guaranteeing that his free agent eligibility would not arrive until after the 2019 season, as opposed to following '18, if they had chosen to start the outfielder in the minors.

Both Xander Bogaerts and Anthony Ranaudo punctuated their strong 2013 seasons with head-turning events on June 13. On that day, Bogaerts, the Red Sox' top prospect, was promoted from Double-A Portland Pawtucket, with the 20-year-old becoming one of the youngest position players in the affiliate's history.
