About Mike Salk

Championship teams know who they are and how they want to win. They forge an identity and know where to turn when big plays need to be made. On Saturday night in Foxboro, the Patriots formally announced their new identity, and it's one we haven't seen in a while: They are a physical football team.

There is no one way to win an NFL playoff game, just one thing you need: a quarterback.
Mike Salk
10/16/2013 - 12:40pm
It was a day like few others, but each game wasn't exactly unique.

Fourth-and-2. It's a down and distance that has become all too familiar to Patriots fans who have used the term derisively ever since Bill Belichick bet on his offense from inside his own 30-yard line and lost. That, as you know, was in Indianapolis in 2009. And, as you also know, a lot has changed since then.

There's a new team playing football at Gillette. The uniforms are the same. Many of the names are familiar. But the style doesn't look anything like what the the locals have become accustomed to seeing. At least not for a while.

The Bruins need to improve their power play. Zdeno Chara plays a ton of minutes -- maybe too many. Chara traditionally has played the point on the aforementioned power play. I think I have a plan to kill two birds with one stone.
Mike Salk
09/08/2013 - 11:52pm
The biggest knock on the Patriots' offseason may turn out to be another feather in Bill Belichick's cap. At least after one game. Danny Amendola was that impressive.

Maybe it says something ugly about me, but I like violence in sports. I love hockey fights, big hits over the middle on defenseless receivers and a power forward laying out a driving guard with a clothesline in the lane. And yes, I like a good beanball from a pitcher trying to send a message to a batter. Even better, I like it when the batter takes exception and the benches clear. The good brawls stick in your memory.

Tim Tebow is many things. Among them, a winner, albeit one who hasn't won in a while. He's a polarizing personality on a team that won't allow him to say too much. And, depending on your point of view, he is the most interesting, the worst, or the most misunderstood quarterback on the planet.
Mike Salk

When you are around the Red Sox, you realize that everything they do tends to get exaggerated. Their winning streaks galvanize a region; their losing streaks seem to depress the local economy. Prospects become household names long before you even know their faces. Bad calls become the worst, and long home runs become the longest. It goes with the territory.
Mike Salk
07/29/2013 - 9:48am
I'm ready for Xander Bogaerts. And I think it's time for the Red Sox to be, too.

Make no mistake, Erik Bedard is a pain. It's been true in Baltimore, Seattle, Boston and I assume Pittsburgh, too. Now, he's raising eyebrows in his new hometown of Houston. Though he's got incredible talent, he doesn't truly love playing baseball, and that shows. It showed again on Saturday when he removed himself from a game in which he was throwing a no-hitter.

I sat on my couch watching the big Texan deal. It was a nice Sunday in July and I didn't know too much about him. I mean, I had heard the name and knew he was a prospect. He was going to get to the majors eventually, so he was on the radar. He didn't get the win in his debut as a starter, but he was the story. I knew I was looking forward to seeing the rookie pitch again.

That the Bruins ran out of patience with Tyler Seguin is not in doubt. It's been written, proclaimed, agreed upon and probably even exaggerated. He needs time to mature, and they didn't feel like waiting. The narrative works because, even if you don't believe the rumors of hard partying (which I do), Seguin's on-ice game needs to develop nearly as much as his supposed off-ice behavior.

Aaron Hernandez is in jail, has been denied bail (twice) and still is a long way away from going to trial. The bizarre and horrible story has cause people to rip the Patriots organization, defend the Patriots organization, and wonder about Bill Belichick and the Patriots Way. That's fine. But the only reason we know who Hernandez is in the first place is because we know him in a football perspective.

Doc Rivers is leaving town and a great era is ending. The Celtics are starting over and the blame game is just beginning.
Mike Salk
06/17/2013 - 10:43am
Why does this Doc Rivers thing bother me so much?
Mike Salk
06/11/2013 - 6:40am
I'll admit it. I'm not wild about Tim Tebow.  But I'm trying to be open-minded.
Mike Salk
06/03/2013 - 10:28am
Whenever underdogs take a 1-0 series lead, the spin cycle goes into overdrive. Everyone who believed that the Penguins were the superior team will have a reason why things went awry or why things will change in Game 2. Maybe the refs were unfair. Maybe the Penguins forgot to play their game. Maybe their aim was a little off, leading to pucks ringing off posts like sonar submarine pings. Maybe ... maybe ... maybe ...

Exit the conversation about Claude Julien’s job security; enter the one about the most difficult coaching decisions he’ll have to make in these Stanley Cup playoffs.
Mike Salk
05/20/2013 - 12:25pm
We know that no team is ever as good as it looks when it is winning nor as bad as it looks when mired in a losing streak. Perhaps the same is true about coaches. But whereas there have been some valid questions about Claude Julien in the weeks leading up to the playoffs, the past few games have offered some equally meaningful glimpses into the reason behind his coaching successes.
Mike Salk
04/29/2013 - 12:21pm
Call it a watershed moment. A fork in the road. Make-or-break time. Or use whatever cliché you choose. But the Bruins are there. Their opening-round series should dictate so much of their future, both short term and long. Let's start by facing facts. Right now, the Bruins kind of stink.
Mike Salk
04/17/2013 - 8:32am
I like this Red Sox team. Maybe that's unpopular and maybe I'm shortchanging the powerful ugliness of the previous year-plus. Or maybe that's an obvious point and I'm just overreacting to the 9-4 start. But I don't care. I like this team.
