COLUMNS
Mike Petraglia
11/16/2012 - 1:10am
FOXBORO -- As we were sitting in the press box before last Sunday’s game against the Bills, I turned to my colleague Kirk Minihane and asked if he thought Logan Mankins had any chance of playing with calf and hip injuries. I should’ve known better.
Mike Petraglia
11/09/2012 - 8:43am
FOXBORO -- Forget questions about his shirtless jacket wardrobe at the Aerosmith concert on Commonwealth Ave. or what he's doing at home to get ready for a third child.
Mike Petraglia
11/02/2012 - 9:51am
They play two entirely different sports with two vastly different body types. Brandon Spikes is a 6-foot-2 beast of an inside linebacker who weighs 255 pounds and flies around the football field trying to punish whoever gets in his way. He sees the target and destroys it.
Mike Petraglia
10/26/2012 - 1:57pm
Any conversation about the greatest coach in Boston sports history begins and ends with Arnold “Red” Auerbach. Creating the greatest basketball dynasty in history, winning eight straight championships and drafting, developing and coaching the greatest defensive player of all time pretty much seals the deal.
Mike Petraglia
10/19/2012 - 12:57pm
FOXBORO -- The Patriots-Jets rivalry isn’t what it used to be. Even Rex Ryan seems bored by it all.
Mike Petraglia
10/12/2012 - 9:17am
CINCINNATI -- Bronson Arroyo for Wily Mo Pena.
Mike Petraglia
10/05/2012 - 10:46am
Say this for the Red Sox, there’s a reason for every move they make.
Mike Petraglia
09/28/2012 - 11:41am
I must admit, I didn’t see Week 4 in Buffalo as a “must-win” situation for the Patriots when the schedule came out in April. But then again, most fans assumed a win over the Cardinals in Week 2 in the home opener. But that’s what happens when you try to project the NFL schedule and the corresponding outcomes of games based on expected results.
Mike Petraglia
09/21/2012 - 10:19am
FOXBORO -- Mention the name Ray Lewis to Vince Wilfork and his eyes light up.
Mike Petraglia
09/14/2012 - 9:43am
FOXBORO -- There are moments that define every NFL player’s career. There are moments that stick out as unforgettable timestamps and unmistakable landmarks in history. I remember sitting in the living room with my then-1-year-old daughter, Janie, watching Super Bowl XXXVI on Feb. 3, 2002.
Mike Petraglia
09/07/2012 - 7:39am
FOXBORO -- Predictions in the NFL come a dime a dozen. It’s why Vegas loves the NFL. As mentioned here last week, the Patriots are 11-2 to raise the Lombardi Trophy on Feb. 2 in New Orleans. Pete Prisco of CBS Sports early on in camp predicted the Patriots would go 16-0 for the second time in six seasons.
Mike Petraglia
08/31/2012 - 10:21am
Driving back from MetLife Stadium in the dead of night after the Patriots' preseason finale on Wednesday, a dismal 6-3 loss to the Giants, I realized several things: The George Washington Bridge is beautiful at 1:30 in the morning.
Mike Petraglia
08/24/2012 - 12:54pm
Believe it or not, I’ll be paying attention to the Red Sox in September. No, I’m not watching for the latest silly, mindless drama or to see if the team can reverse last September and go 20-7.
Mike Petraglia
08/17/2012 - 1:03am
Here’s some free advice for Larry Lucchino. Hold a press conference and begin it with the following words: “We’re sorry and embarrassed for the way our organization has behaved.”
Mike Petraglia
08/10/2012 - 2:11pm
FOXBORO – Let’s get one thing straight. These are not the 2007 Patriots. Why? Because these Patriots will go as far as their young defense takes them. Absurd?
Mike Petraglia
08/03/2012 - 11:50am
Just imagine ... Robert Kraft stops by Bill Belichick’s office and says, “I don’t really like the way Scott O’Brien yelled at Chandler Jones this week for not getting in the special teams huddle during kick-off drills.”
Mike Petraglia
07/27/2012 - 11:47am
FOXBORO -- As I was waiting with the huddled masses around an agility cone on the Patriots practice field Thursday, I was thinking about how I was going try to tone down all those “undefeated” predictions and try and convince people that the Patriots are not going undefeated.
Mike Petraglia
07/20/2012 - 3:03pm
This week has changed my feeling and belief on the Red Sox.
Mike Petraglia
07/13/2012 - 2:58pm
So often in the first half, as the Red Sox were putting up a so-so performance on their way to a 43-43 mark, people would ask me, "Trags, what do you think of Bobby Valentine?" or "What is the clubhouse like with Bobby V in
Mike Petraglia
07/06/2012 - 9:58am
Forget the whining about contracts, the imminent return of two-thirds of Boston’s outfield and the Red Sox bats getting hot again at Fenway Park.
Mike Petraglia
06/21/2012 - 10:08pm
Mike Petraglia
06/15/2012 - 1:27pm
FOXBORO -- There has never been a sports franchise more focused and determined than the Patriots. That single-minded purpose was again on full display this week during the team’s annual June minicamp. What did I learn from attending all three days? Barring injury, no one is going to touch the Patriots again in the AFC. No one.
Mike Petraglia
06/08/2012 - 8:08am
I was all set and ready to write the “See, I told you so” column for the Trags Bag this week.
Mike Petraglia
06/01/2012 - 12:38am
The Celtics will beat the Heat and advance to the NBA finals.
Mike Petraglia
05/25/2012 - 12:31pm
There’s something missing from this rendition of what -- before Bird and Magic -- was the most intense rivalry in basketball. As we look ahead to Game 7 of the Eastern Conference semifinals between the Celtics and Sixers, one question comes to mind: Where’s the hate?

Minor Details Ep. 98: Youth without the transition - Rusney Castillo and Brock Holt

How can teams acquire players who are entering their primes without having to live through the potentially massive transition of prospects coming from the minors to the big leagues? The Red Sox have two such case studies. The signing of Cuban outfielder Rusney Castillo represents one effort to acquire a player for his prime years for whom the transition to big league-caliber competition might not be turbulent. Red Sox assistant director of player personnel discusses the scouting process involved with landing Castillo. The episode also features Brock Holt, the one rookie who played at a consistently high level for the Red Sox this year. Holt explores some of the distinctions that might help to explain why he did not experience some of the struggles that characterized the seasons of Xander Bogaerts and Jackie Bradley Jr.
