We’ve been down this road so many times in the last 14 years, it almost seems passé. Boston-New York.

Just like his team, Claude Julien has a new lease on life. It took the most miraculous comeback in Game 7 Stanley Cup playoff history, but Julien lives to coach another playoff series with the Bruins.

If Game 7 is the best thing in sports, Game 6 is Boston’s worst nightmare.
Mike Petraglia

Funny how perception can change come playoff time with the Bruins. Two weeks before the playoffs, the perception was that Boston was limping toward the finish line. The perception was that the Bruins had no identity and their top two wingers on their top line weren’t producing. Their top-line center was underperforming.
Mike Petraglia
05/09/2013 - 12:09am
Now we can really say the playoffs have begun for the Boston Bruins. And David Krejci made sure it got off on the right foot.

Championship teams are defined by how they handle adversity.

Is this really how it ends for Paul Pierce in a Celtics uniform?

NEW YORK -- It’s the question everyone in New York was asking after Game 5 at Madison Square Garden. Are the Knicks scared? It’s a very fair question to ask. Are the Knicks worried about joining their baseball brethren in the Bronx from 2004?

Talk about whistling by a graveyard.

It's always hard to watch a champ grow old. It's even harder when that champ knows its beaten and its spirit is broken. That's exactly what's happened to these short-handed Celtics.

After watching the worst two playoff halves of offensive basketball in the long, illustrious history of the NBA’s proudest franchise, what else is there left for Doc Rivers to do?

NEW YORK -- Now we know why Rajon Rondo is so important to the Celtics.
Mike Petraglia

The Knicks are hotter. The Knicks are deeper. The Knicks are playing their best basketball at the right time, winning 13 in a row at one point in late March and early April. The Knicks won the Atlantic Division for the first time in 19 years with a 54-28 record.

What now? Like millions of others, I watched in horror as the images of Monday afternoon were broadcast on television across the country and the world. Unlike many, I had a seat close to the epicenter of the Boston Marathon bombings, inside the press box at Fenway Park.
Mike Petraglia

I want to believe this Celtics team has one last run in it. I want to believe that -- in spite of injuries and ugly, ugly losses to the likes of Minnesota, Cleveland and Charlotte in the last two weeks -- the C's can make things interesting for their fans.
Mike Petraglia
04/05/2013 - 1:52am
Funny what a difference a trade deadline can make.

Claude Julien chuckled at the question. Will he be happy when the Jarome Iginla trade watch is over? “If it works out,” the Bruins coach answered with a nervous twinge in his smile. Maybe the coach knew something.

As I sit in my living room watching Davidson and Marquette at Rupp Arena 900 miles away in Lexington, Ky., I’m trying really hard to get excited for March Madness.

Well, the dust is starting to settle. New England is beginning to come to grips with the fact that the most productive receiver in franchise history is gone, no longer wanted by a team that has made a business out of moving on.

FORT MYERS, Fla. -- Red Sox chief executive Larry Lucchino threw it out there in his spring training introductory news conference -- the Red Sox as “scrappy underdogs” in the American League.

FORT MYERS, Fla. -- When Larry Lucchino addressed reporters at the beginning of camp last week, I asked him if he felt more relaxed without all the drama that has followed the Red Sox around for the last decade.
Mike Petraglia
02/15/2013 - 11:56am
FORT MYERS, Fla. -- John Lackey is a changed man. He believes it, and so should you. For the first time since Tommy John surgery on his right elbow in the fall of 2011, Lackey feels like a starting major league pitcher again.
Mike Petraglia
02/08/2013 - 1:15pm
Maybe it’s the fact that a blizzard is barreling toward New England two days after the 35th anniversary of the Blizzard of ’78. Maybe it’s the fact that -- fingers crossed -- I’ll be on a plane early next week bound for sunny Fort Myers ready to cover spring training. Or maybe, just maybe it’s because I really believe this year the Red Sox will be different. They will actually be fun to watch.
