About Kirk Minihane

Kirk Minihane thinks "Slap Shot" is -- without argument -- the best sports movie ever made and is also convinced the 1985-86 Celtics would have finished with a record of 78-4 if they had cared about the regular season. He has been a columnist at since 2009 and is now part of The Dennis & Callahan Show.

One man's diary from a Game 7 that turned out to be the end of a 39-year drought and the completion of the greatest seven-year run by any city in North American sports history ... 8:00 p.m. (EST): To be safe, I just threw all the numbers out the window.

“I was just saying on that particular play, I would have played it different. That’s the difference between me and him. I have been pumping his tires ever since the series started. I haven’t heard one nice thing he had to say about me. That’s the way it is.’’

To borrow a phrase from the great Ed Rooney (a beautiful man -- and a happy 25th anniversary to Ferris Bueller's Day Off), "I don't trust Plaxico Burress any further than I can throw him."  Arrests? Sure.

Unless you count the inevitable failed comeback attempt next season (I'll set the over/under at 3.5 starts and take the under), it's over.

“I think he had his finger in my mouth. I don’t think I bit him. He put his hand up, he put it in the other guy’s face, and a finger got in my mouth. That’s what happened." Alex Burrows Punk.

This idea was triggered while watching Adrian Gonzalez on Sunday night against the Cubs. Gonzalez went 4-for-4 in the game to move his average up to .342 on the season. It was after his final at-bat that I began to wonder if I was looking at the best hitter in baseball.

Not sure why people are trying to make a story out of Tim Wakefield's performance on Sunday night.  OK, so a 44-year-old (he'll be 45 in August) doesn't step in and give up a run and four hits in 6.2 innings every day. I'll grant you that. But how, I wonder, did we all manage to forget the true headline from Sunday?

With a quarter of the Red Sox' season in the books (give or take a game) I figured it would be as good a time as any for the first report card of 2011.

MIAMI — When LeBron James plays basketball at the level he did on Tuesday night, two things become apparent really quickly.

MIAMI — Let's get the obvious out of the way: If you want to get technical (get it?), Paul Pierce has only Paul Pierce to blame for getting kicked out of Sunday's Game 1 loss to the Heat.
Kirk Minihane

Let's get this out of the way: What I don't know about hockey could fill the Grand Canyon about 500 times over.  There's a reason why I never write about the Bruins. I would really, really suck at it. I'd be better use for covering the elections in Zimbabwe. I'm a 36 handicap when it comes to hockey knowledge.

Why a Celtics playoff stock watch?
Kirk Minihane
04/20/2011 - 7:17am
The first two games of the Celtics-Knicks series has been terrific theatre, certainly a hell of a lot better than Spider-Man on Broadway (and unlike Spidey on 42nd street, no serious injuries, either -- unless you count the coaching reputation of Mike D'Antoni).
Kirk Minihane
04/12/2011 - 11:47am
Ladies and Gentleman, your 2011 Boston Red Sox! A 2-8 record, tied for the worst in baseball. Four and a half games out of first place. Swept by the Rangers and the Indians (who have two of the three best records in baseball).
Kirk Minihane
04/08/2011 - 11:17pm
Now the debate can finally be settled when it comes to the 2004 Red Sox.  It's not Johnny Damon. It's not Kevin Millar. Sorry, Mark Bellhorn.
Kirk Minihane
04/04/2011 - 7:15am
It's OK to panic. Part of being a sports fan, isn't it? I'm not talking about being irrational. Nobody thinks the Red Sox are 0-3 and on their way to 68-94.
