About Kirk Minihane

Kirk Minihane thinks "Slap Shot" is -- without argument -- the best sports movie ever made and is also convinced the 1985-86 Celtics would have finished with a record of 78-4 if they had cared about the regular season. He has been a columnist at WEEI.com since 2009 and is the co-host of "Sports Saturday" on WEEI.

Ready? The Jets beat the Patriots last Sunday. You remember — Wes Welker sat, Tom Brady stunk (but may or may not have had an excuse), Mark Sanchez was great and Rex handed Belichick his lunch. All adds up to 28-21.  We're briefed? OK. This is where our story starts.

Mailbag time and I don't get it.

01/17/2011 - 11:37pm
Report Card time and I'm still not sure what happened. I was in the press box for Jets 28, Patriots 21 (sitting right next to Suzy Kolber, who it should be noted did not seem suitably impressed when I broke out what I thought was a more than passable Joe Namath impression) and I've since watched the game twice.

FOXBORO -- That was called walking the walk. "Some teams say all the things in front of the camera and be humble, humble pie, all that stuff," said a mocking Bart Scott in the locker room after the Jets ended the Patriots (and no points for progress, this is now and forever a lost) season on Sunday. "But when you play the game they're shooting the guns at you, talking mad trash on the field. We do business one way, they do business another way."

If you actually need to know anything about the Jets on Thursday, may I be bold enough to suggest that these are four things that would be most important:

FLORHAM PARK, N.J. – It's the not at all awaited return of the Jersey Four! Here are the four things you really, really need to know about the Jets following Wednesday's practice (while understanding that a third “really” would not have been professional):

01/10/2011 - 9:56pm
"I recognize this week, this is about Bill Belichick vs. Rex Ryan. There’s no question. It’s personal. This is about him against myself, and that’s what it’s going to come down to. When you look at both teams, they’re very even.

01/02/2011 - 7:50pm
And how did you enjoy the best eight-week stretch of quarterbacking in NFL history, Mr. Alge Crumpler? "Man, Tom is amazing," said Crumpler after Brady completed 10-of-16 passes for 199 yards, two TDs and (pause for shock) no picks in the Patriots' 38-7 blasting of the Dolphins on Sunday. "It's amazing. The guy is so good. … I can't believe how good he is sometimes." Just how good is Brady? Three more wins and it's time for Joe Montana to step aside.

One man's Week 17 NFL picks … -- BALTIMORE (-9.5) over Cincinnati  The Ravens need a win and a Pittsburgh loss at Cleveland to land the two seed in the AFC. Have to figure the Steelers will find a way to win, but just the possibility of a bye week should be enough to keep the Ravens motivated to handle a Bengals team that has showed some unexpected life late in the year and beat the Ravens earlier in the season.  -- NEW ORLEANS (-9) over Tampa Bay

Strange times over here at the mailbag. I'm still battling back from a root canal on Monday, which was pretty much the worst two and a half hours of my life that didn't involve characters speaking the Na'vi language.

Report card time and it's back to normal.

12/26/2010 - 9:27pm
The Patriots have played two teams twice so far in 2010. That would the New York Jets and the Buffalo Bills all the way back in Week 2 and Week 3 (ah, September, that innocent time when we all thought Tony and Eva were in it for the long run and held out hope that "Little Fockers" would merely be a disaster, rather than the single worst comedy ever released by a major studio). Anyone up for a round of "when to peak at the right time?" Combined score of first game vs. Bills and Jets. Other Guys 58, Pats 52.

One man's Week 16 NFL picks ... -- Carolina (+15) over PITTSBURGH
Kirk Minihane
12/22/2010 - 10:54pm
Mailbag time and I don't get it. Michael Vick as MVP, I mean. How has this gained momentum? He's having a terrific season, no question about it. And he was unbelievable in that comeback against the Giants on Sunday. In any other year he'd be a fine choice as MVP. Just not this year.
Kirk Minihane
12/20/2010 - 8:21pm
Report Card time and this was an eye-opener.
Kirk Minihane
12/20/2010 - 4:00am
FOXBORO - Look, what you saw on Sunday night was this: A game the Patriots would not have won without a 71-yard kickoff return by an offensive lineman (Gale Sayers Connolly) and a can of corn surefire INT drop by a future Hall of Famer (I'm thinking Charles Woodson might not open up that bed and breakfast in Foxboro when his playing career is over).
Kirk Minihane
12/16/2010 - 8:43pm
One man's Week 15 NFL picks, made while trying to figure out if I should let my strength coach stand this close to the computer … -- San Francisco (+9.5) over SAN DIEGO

Mailbag time and it's debate central this week.
Kirk Minihane
12/09/2010 - 7:42am
Mailbag time and the folks are enjoying the victory lap.  Lots and lots of Rex Ryan bashing this week and this'll be a Pats-heavy 'bag as usual, but let me be the first (OK, maybe not the first) to ask:
Kirk Minihane
12/07/2010 - 9:24pm
Report Card time and the rule here has always been this: If the Patriots beat a team with at least a share of the best record in the NFL by six touchdowns it's love letter time.
Kirk Minihane
12/07/2010 - 3:53am
FOXBORO - Nobody talks more than the Jets. You heard it all over the last week and a half. Rex Ryan was ready to come to Foxboro to "kick ass." Santonio Holmes told us that no rookie could stop him, LaDainian Tomlinson said that the Jets "hate the Patriots" and Braylon Edwards didn't understand why "it's all about Brady, Belichick and New England."
Kirk Minihane
12/01/2010 - 7:24pm
Mailbag Time and I'm wearing Uggs and waiting for a call back from Leonard Hair Transplant Associates.  Yup, this is home base of Camp Brady. And my column on Monday suggesting that Brady is the clear-cut MVP brought the expected feedback.
Kirk Minihane
11/28/2010 - 5:12pm
Report Card time and we'll look forward by looking back. Sure, we'll hand out the grades from last Thursday's win by the Patriots over the Lions, but it's been four days since we got to watch Kid Rock and listen to The Rock and everything else from the 45-24 (much closer than that final, by the way) Thanksgiving game. It's time to get ready for the Jets. So we'll try and figure out if anything we saw in the Lions game might be factor in next Monday night's heavyweight battle. To the card we go ... -- QUARTERBACK - A+
Kirk Minihane
11/27/2010 - 1:15am
There wasn't a whole lot of revenge talk in the Celtics' locker room prior to Friday's game with the Raptors (in fairness there wasn't much talk at all. The highlight was probably Nate Robinson reading the birthday card he gave Avery Bradley, who turned 20 on Friday). Sure, last Sunday's 102-101 defeat at Toronto fell in the "mild shocker" category, but a veteran-led team isn't going to get too worked up over any November loss. But come on, there had to be some need to get back at these guys, right? Isn't that human nature?
Kirk Minihane
11/23/2010 - 7:37pm
Mailbag Time, and I'm fairly certain this is the only place on WEEI.com where you'll find both a Manning vs. Brady QB debate AND a Jamie Lee Curtis vs. Denise Richards cleavage debate. Plus we take a look at why this Patriots defense needs to step up, break down all the Week 12 NFL picks, figure out what it is that Ernie Adams actually does and define The Belushi Clause. So to the 'bag we go … -- Kirk,
