About Kirk Minihane

Kirk Minihane thinks "Slap Shot" is -- without argument -- the best sports movie ever made and is also convinced the 1985-86 Celtics would have finished with a record of 78-4 if they had cared about the regular season. He has been a columnist at WEEI.com since 2009 and is now part of The Dennis & Callahan Show.

COLUMNS

10/04/2011 - 5:59am
One man's Week 4 Patriots Report Card, written with the understanding that while Wes Welker probably won't maintain his 160-catch pace, he's got a better chance than Vince Wilfork does keeping his eight

09/27/2011 - 5:41am
Report Card time and comparing Chad Ochocinco to Carl Crawford is silly, of course -- about $136 million reasons why that doesn't work -- but it strikes me that both have had a tough time adjusting to new teams (and I'll bet you never thought of that -- it's why they pay me, folks).

09/22/2011 - 9:24am
Mailbag Time and let's get this out of the way: I think Theo Epstein is a good general manager, for all the reasons we've heard a million times (developing players, pretty solid trade track record, etc.) I'm not a professional Theo-basher (you've read them and heard 'em on the radio -- the guy can't do a

Mailbag Time and let's start with this preface:
Kirk Minihane
09/14/2011 - 5:50am
Report Card time and it's the ol' written lap dance for the offense and a little bit of the red pen treatment for the defense. That's how it goes when you put up 688 yards of offense and give up 488 yards on defense (and yes, I know it's not quite that simple).  To the card we go ... -- QUARTERBACK -- A+

09/12/2011 - 10:36pm
One man's running diary of the start of the Patriots 2011 season AND a new-found respect for ESPN. OK, maybe just the start of the Patriots season.
Kirk Minihane
09/09/2011 - 2:34pm
One man's Week 1 NFL selections (note: I picked Green Bay over New Orleans on Thursday, which is historic if only because it means I'm over .500 for the first time in the year-plus I've been making picks for the website.) ... --

One man's ranking of the 10 best quarterbacks in the NFL today ... -- 10. Eli Manning Just to put an end to a debate that never actually started:

The Yankees and Red Sox are the two best offensive teams in baseball. I'll allow a pause for shock.

A question struck me while watching Leslie Visser on CBS during the Patriots-Lions on Saturday night (and no, it had nothing to do with Bruce Jenner): In 2011, is there any value to having a sideline reporter as part of an NFL broadcast?

Here's what we know (and thought we knew) about Jonathan Papelbon:

About a year ago -- July 30, to be exact -- I wrote a column attempting to answer this question:
Kirk Minihane
08/05/2011 - 7:28am
Let's be fair here: Carl Crawford isn't having a bad season. He's having a disastrous season, in its own way every bit (any maybe more) horrific as John Lackey's.
Kirk Minihane
08/01/2011 - 10:43am
John Lackey, maybe you heard, is in the second year of a five-year, $82.5 million contract. He's the highest-paid pitcher in Red Sox history by kind of a lot (I think 14 million bucks is kind of a lot, anyway).
Kirk Minihane
07/27/2011 - 11:02am
Walk me through this as if I'm a complete moron (I know, I know, but sometimes we need to suspend disbelief. Or do we need to suspend belief? I'm confused. And also a moron):

A confession: I love the trade deadline.
Kirk Minihane
07/18/2011 - 11:13am
Let's get the obvious out of the way:
Kirk Minihane
07/14/2011 - 9:48pm
As we get ready to begin the second half we know this about the 2011 Red Sox: They are exactly where you and I thought they would be when we made our predictions in the spring. Are they going to win 100 games? Probably not, but they are going to finish somewhere in the 95-victory range.
Kirk Minihane
07/12/2011 - 11:30am
If you're under the age of, let's say 30, what you are about to read will literally make zero sense. Ready for it? There was a time when Chris Berman was a fresh, funny and very nearly revolutionary figure in television.
Kirk Minihane
07/05/2011 - 8:58am
With half of the Red Sox' season in the books (give or take a game or three,) I figured it would be as good a time as any for the second report card of 2011.  Couple of things before we get started:

PHILADELPHIA -- The Red Sox and Phillies began a three-game series on Tuesday night. You probably heard that it was maybe a World Series preview.
