About Kirk Minihane

Kirk Minihane thinks "Slap Shot" is -- without argument -- the best sports movie ever made and is also convinced the 1985-86 Celtics would have finished with a record of 78-4 if they had cared about the regular season. He has been a columnist at WEEI.com since 2009 and is the co-host of "Sports Saturday" on WEEI.

Why a Celtics playoff stock watch?

The first two games of the Celtics-Knicks series has been terrific theatre, certainly a hell of a lot better than Spider-Man on Broadway (and unlike Spidey on 42nd street, no serious injuries, either -- unless you count the coaching reputation of Mike D'Antoni).

Ladies and Gentleman, your 2011 Boston Red Sox! A 2-8 record, tied for the worst in baseball. Four and a half games out of first place. Swept by the Rangers and the Indians (who have two of the three best records in baseball).

Now the debate can finally be settled when it comes to the 2004 Red Sox.  It's not Johnny Damon. It's not Kevin Millar. Sorry, Mark Bellhorn. Manny Ramirez is the Ultimate Idiot.

It's OK to panic. Part of being a sports fan, isn't it? I'm not talking about being irrational. Nobody thinks the Red Sox are 0-3 and on their way to 68-94.

One man's completely uneducated guess at five headlines you'll be reading this week … 1. Pierce scores 25, Garnett adds 18 in win over Knicks

I've heard enough about Kendrick Perkins. I mean, really? Still? It's been six days. My patience has worn off. A nice player, yes. A contributor to the 2008 championship team? Sure.

Bobby Orr has a statue. Makes sense, right? For all the reasons we know about. Changed the game, maybe the best player ever, flying through the air vs. St. Louis, all that stuff. A statue for No. 4 is the no brainer to end all no brainers. Larry Bird has a statue.

I think the 2011 Red Sox are going to be good. I'll even give you very good.

02/13/2011 - 8:12pm
The 2010-11 Miami Heat have a record of 39-15, third-best in the NBA. They are on pace to win 60 games, no small feat (only been done once in the franchise's 23-year history, and while this isn't the Lakers in terms of lore this isn't the Clippers we're talking about either).

One man's running Super Bowl diary ... 6:34 p.m. (EST): Antonio Brown with a 37-yard return to start. Give me a minute, I'm still in shock after watching Mike Tomlin slap Chris Myers on the ass after their pre-game interview.

"I was given assurances that [Belichick] would tell his side of the story. He went out and stonewalled the press. I feel like I was deceived." Roger Goodell First: This isn't going to be a defense of Spygate. Bill Belichick cheated and got busted. I don't care who busted him, how many other teams did it, what it means historically, none of that matters today.

"I think everybody wants a new deal, but I wouldn't say anything I did this past year would warrant one or anything like that. … You go into the offseason thinking about what you can do to get better, and there's plenty of things I can do to have a better year." -- Wes Welker

One man's running diary of the AFC Championship game … 6:41 P.M.: One minute until kickoff and I'm officially listed as "Doubtful -- Concussion suffered during Shannon Sharpe interview with Mike Tomlin." That being said, Sharpe would actually be an upgrade over Piers Morgan on CNN. 6:44: Steelers first drive: Antonio Cromartie with a hands to the face penalty on Emmaunel Sanders. Lots of contact, which means Sanders will be giving birth to his first child in early October.

Dale isn't buying the Tortorella hype and thinks he's a little overrated. DJ thinks he's a good coach, but isn't a fan of anti-media stance. Another big topic for B's fans this season is the play of Tyler Seguin and why he has yet to become the superstar everyone anticipates he will be.
