About Kirk Minihane

Kirk Minihane thinks "Slap Shot" is -- without argument -- the best sports movie ever made and is also convinced the 1985-86 Celtics would have finished with a record of 78-4 if they had cared about the regular season. He has been a columnist at WEEI.com since 2009 and is the co-host of "Sports Saturday" on WEEI.

Let's be fair here: Carl Crawford isn't having a bad season. He's having a disastrous season, in its own way every bit (any maybe more) horrific as John Lackey's.
Kirk Minihane

John Lackey, maybe you heard, is in the second year of a five-year, $82.5 million contract. He's the highest-paid pitcher in Red Sox history by kind of a lot (I think 14 million bucks is kind of a lot, anyway).

Walk me through this as if I'm a complete moron (I know, I know, but sometimes we need to suspend disbelief. Or do we need to suspend belief? I'm confused. And also a moron):

A confession: I love the trade deadline.

07/18/2011 - 12:13pm
Let's get the obvious out of the way:  The United States-Japan World Cup final on Sunday was an absolute classic, packed with more drama than all five seasons of the late and very great "Friday Night Lights" put together. Everyone on the field gave everything they had, the very best at their sport playing with the desperation you want to see in a game that defines legacies -- all that stuff.

07/14/2011 - 10:48pm
As we get ready to begin the second half we know this about the 2011 Red Sox: They are exactly where you and I thought they would be when we made our predictions in the spring. Are they going to win 100 games? Probably not, but they are going to finish somewhere in the 95-victory range.

If you're under the age of, let's say 30, what you are about to read will literally make zero sense. Ready for it? There was a time when Chris Berman was a fresh, funny and very nearly revolutionary figure in television.
Kirk Minihane
07/05/2011 - 9:58am
With half of the Red Sox' season in the books (give or take a game or three,) I figured it would be as good a time as any for the second report card of 2011.  Couple of things before we get started:

PHILADELPHIA -- The Red Sox and Phillies began a three-game series on Tuesday night. You probably heard that it was maybe a World Series preview.

We all know what happened after the Celtics drafted Len Bias.

One man's diary from a Game 7 that turned out to be the end of a 39-year drought and the completion of the greatest seven-year run by any city in North American sports history ... 8:00 p.m. (EST): To be safe, I just threw all the numbers out the window.

“I was just saying on that particular play, I would have played it different. That’s the difference between me and him. I have been pumping his tires ever since the series started. I haven’t heard one nice thing he had to say about me. That’s the way it is.’’ -- Roberto Luongo It's kind of hard to work up any hatred for Roberto Luongo.

To borrow a phrase from the great Ed Rooney (a beautiful man -- and a happy 25th anniversary to Ferris Bueller's Day Off), "I don't trust Plaxico Burress any further than I can throw him."  Arrests? Sure. Temporary restraining orders? I mean, just a couple. But who am I to judge? I'm still not allowed within 500 yards of Jack Edwards (which, I can tell you, makes going to Bruins games quite a chore). Pending civil lawsuits? Only one.

Unless you count the inevitable failed comeback attempt next season (I'll set the over/under at 3.5 starts and take the under), it's over.

“I think he had his finger in my mouth. I don’t think I bit him. He put his hand up, he put it in the other guy’s face, and a finger got in my mouth. That’s what happened." Alex Burrows Punk.

"We did it. Nineteen years baby. I want to thank you very much. That's why I'm telling you first: I'm about to retire. Love you, talk to you soon." -- Shaquille O'Neal's video message (via Twitter), Wednesday afternoon

"I always hear my name mentioned in connection with Larry Bird's. People are always saying, 'That Scott Hastings, he's sure no Larry Bird.' "  Scott Hastings, 1988 Full disclosure: When it comes to Larry Bird, I'm as biased as it gets.

This idea was triggered while watching Adrian Gonzalez on Sunday night against the Cubs. Gonzalez went 4-for-4 in the game to move his average up to .342 on the season. It was after his final at-bat that I began to wonder if I was looking at the best hitter in baseball.
Kirk Minihane
05/23/2011 - 12:06pm
Not sure why people are trying to make a story out of Tim Wakefield's performance on Sunday night.  OK, so a 44-year-old (he'll be 45 in August) doesn't step in and give up a run and four hits in 6.2 innings every day. I'll grant you that. But how, I wonder, did we all manage to forget the true headline from Sunday?
Kirk Minihane

With a quarter of the Red Sox' season in the books (give or take a game) I figured it would be as good a time as any for the first report card of 2011.

Five thoughts as we say goodbye to the 2010-11 season. Thanks for the memories, Chris Johnson ...

Is it still too early, John Lackey apologists? Can we go ahead and question if this $82.5 million contract is a complete and utter disaster?

Five off-day thoughts as we ready for the end of an era, the beginning of the best Boston sports comeback since 2004 or a stay of execution ...

On that same day, right-hander Anthony Ranaudo punched out 13 batters for Double-A Portland, the most strikeouts by a Red Sox minor leaguer since Jon Lester in 2005.
