About Kirk Minihane

Kirk Minihane thinks "Slap Shot" is -- without argument -- the best sports movie ever made and is also convinced the 1985-86 Celtics would have finished with a record of 78-4 if they had cared about the regular season. He has been a columnist at WEEI.com since 2009 and is now part of The Dennis & Callahan Show.

If things don't work out for the 2012 Red Sox -- and I'm not saying they won't, just allowing for the possibility -- I think I already know who a main goat will be.
Kirk Minihane
03/22/2012 - 5:41am
Well, we have our definitive answer. Bountygate is worse than Spygate. And in Roger Goodell's eyes, it wasn't even close.
Kirk Minihane
03/21/2012 - 11:09am
So we’ve now had 44 full seasons since Carl Yastrzemski won the Triple Crown. If no one manages to pull it off this season it will be 45 years, which is really remarkable. Forty-five years.

I think Tim Tebow is a terrible quarterback.

Of course, there are injuries.

Here's a dirty little sports secret: The Larry Bird-Magic Johnson rivalry, the one that has spawned books and documentaries and (very soon) a Broadway play and endless hours of nostalgia on YouTube for anyone between the ages of, say, 35-50? Overrated.

03/01/2012 - 7:21am
Jason Varitek will officially retire on Thursday, ending a terrific career by almost any standard.

And on the 144th day, Josh Beckett finally spoke to the media.  The verdict? Maybe he should've kept quiet.

With the Red Sox just a couple of weeks away from playing the Twins 66 times in 20 days, you are just about guaranteed a Sox, Bruins or Celtics game on TV (usually at least two) every night over the next couple of months.

INDIANAPOLIS -- The Giants are going to win Super Bowl XLVI.  We'll get to why in a moment, but first let's debunk a couple of myths.

INDIANAPOLIS -- There are two players in NFL history with at least 10 catches in two Super Bowls.

INDIANAPOLIS -- Spygate? Really?
Kirk Minihane
01/29/2012 - 11:04pm
INDIANAPOLIS -- The late, very great Robert Altman (I feel almost embarrassed to have to list his credentials, this is the director of "Nashville," "Short Cuts," "M*A*S*H," "The Player") once noted that there are really only about six or seven different stories, the rest is about character development.

OWINGS MILLS, Md. -- File the next sentence under things that would never happen in the World of Belichick: The best player on the defense using the media to call out the quarterback six days before the AFC championship.

FOXBORO -- With 11:46 left in the third quarter of the Patriots-Broncos game on Saturday night Tom Brady had twice as many TD passes (six) than Tim Tebow had completions (three).

"The road environment is very different than our friendly home crowd, who when I looked up, half the stadium was gone when we were up 21 points early fourth quarter, which I wasn’t so happy about. I don’t think Jets fans leave early." -- Tom Brady, September 2010

Isn't there always an X-factor in the postseason, a player that no one expected to make a significant contribution to a championship?

The Patriots are going to the Super Bowl.
Kirk Minihane
01/09/2012 - 7:43am
It's tough to win 13 games in an NFL season.  How tough, exactly? Well, the other three teams in the AFC East - Bills, Dolphins, Jets, in case you needed a refresher - have won 13 or more games a total of four times in a combined 150 seasons of professional football. The Patriots have won 13 or more games five times in the last nine seasons.
