About Kirk Minihane

Kirk Minihane thinks "Slap Shot" is -- without argument -- the best sports movie ever made and is also convinced the 1985-86 Celtics would have finished with a record of 78-4 if they had cared about the regular season. He has been a columnist at WEEI.com since 2009 and is the co-host of "Sports Saturday" on WEEI.

Bye Week Report Card time and we'll start with a question: Is this team going 14-2 again?

So now we can add Jason Varitek to the list of Red Sox players who have spoken (on the record, at least) since the end of the season.

"I'm not apologizing to anyone for being aggressive and trying to win. That's what we are here for. … You can say a lot of things about me as a coach. One thing I'm NOT is scared. I'm not afraid to go for it." -- Bill Belichick

"Even after he became the owner of a real big league baseball team, [John] Henry continued to play in a sophisticated fantasy league in which he deployed Jamesean tools and, as he put it, 'cleaned up. I won every year.'" -- Moneyball

Report Card time, and I have no idea if Wes Welker is the best wide receiver in the NFL.

One man's Week 4 Patriots Report Card, written with the understanding that while Wes Welker probably won't maintain his 160-catch pace, he's got a better chance than Vince Wilfork does keeping his eight-INT pace ... To the 'card we go ... -- QUARTERBACK -- B+

Report Card time and comparing Chad Ochocinco to Carl Crawford is silly, of course -- about $136 million reasons why that doesn't work -- but it strikes me that both have had a tough time adjusting to new teams (and I'll bet you never thought of that -- it's why they pay me, folks).

Mailbag Time and let's start with this preface:
Kirk Minihane
09/14/2011 - 6:50am
Report Card time and it's the ol' written lap dance for the offense and a little bit of the red pen treatment for the defense. That's how it goes when you put up 688 yards of offense and give up 488 yards on defense (and yes, I know it's not quite that simple).  To the card we go ... -- QUARTERBACK -- A+

One man's running diary of the start of the Patriots 2011 season AND a new-found respect for ESPN. OK, maybe just the start of the Patriots season.

A question struck me while watching Leslie Visser on CBS during the Patriots-Lions on Saturday night (and no, it had nothing to do with Bruce Jenner): In 2011, is there any value to having a sideline reporter as part of an NFL broadcast?

About a year ago -- July 30, to be exact -- I wrote a column attempting to answer this question:
Kirk Minihane
08/05/2011 - 8:28am
Let's be fair here: Carl Crawford isn't having a bad season. He's having a disastrous season, in its own way every bit (any maybe more) horrific as John Lackey's.
Kirk Minihane
08/01/2011 - 11:43am
John Lackey, maybe you heard, is in the second year of a five-year, $82.5 million contract. He's the highest-paid pitcher in Red Sox history by kind of a lot (I think 14 million bucks is kind of a lot, anyway).

Walk me through this as if I'm a complete moron (I know, I know, but sometimes we need to suspend disbelief. Or do we need to suspend belief? I'm confused. And also a moron):
