About Kirk Minihane

Kirk Minihane thinks "Slap Shot" is -- without argument -- the best sports movie ever made and is also convinced the 1985-86 Celtics would have finished with a record of 78-4 if they had cared about the regular season. He has been a columnist at WEEI.com since 2009 and is the co-host of "Sports Saturday" on WEEI.

Adrian Gonzalez has a $154 million contract, second-largest in Red Sox history. He's making $21 million this season, eighth-highest in baseball (Carl Crawford - at $20.3 million - is 11th).

Immature. Selfish. Self-destructive. Moronic. Indefensible. All are absolutely accurate if describing Rajon Rondo's chest-bump of referee Marc Davis with 41 seconds left in Sunday's loss to the Hawks. Add this, please: Potentially series-altering.

Is there any question that Terry Francona will get the loudest ovation at Fenway Park on Friday?
Kirk Minihane
04/10/2012 - 11:15am
Ozzie Guillen is a moron.  We know this, of course, knew it long before he told Time magazine that he "loves" and "respects" Fidel Castro. Guillen is the worst kind of combination -- loud, desperate for attention and not particularly bright. It ended badly for Guillen in Chicago and will end badly in Miami, if it hasn't already ended before it really began.

Let's let reason and logic have its moment.

Ben Cherington is off to a lousy start. Look, that doesn't mean he'll be a failure. This is not a GM obit, he could very easily turn out to be a terrific executive. To suggest that we should come to a verdict on Ben Cherington, GM, before Opening Day of his first year in charge would be about as stupid as it is insulting.

"I thought that the manager that managed the Mets that I was not a big fan of was now going to be a different manager, and I don't think there's anything different at all. There's a lot of things I think that are happening not just from his perspective, but when you talk to these guys -- and I'm still talking to some of these guys -- I don't think this is going well.

If things don't work out for the 2012 Red Sox -- and I'm not saying they won't, just allowing for the possibility -- I think I already know who a main goat will be.

Well, we have our definitive answer. Bountygate is worse than Spygate. And in Roger Goodell's eyes, it wasn't even close.

So we’ve now had 44 full seasons since Carl Yastrzemski won the Triple Crown. If no one manages to pull it off this season it will be 45 years, which is really remarkable. Forty-five years. In the 45 years prior to 1967?

Here's a dirty little sports secret: The Larry Bird-Magic Johnson rivalry, the one that has spawned books and documentaries and (very soon) a Broadway play and endless hours of nostalgia on YouTube for anyone between the ages of, say, 35-50? Overrated.

INDIANAPOLIS -- The late, very great Robert Altman (I feel almost embarrassed to have to list his credentials, this is the director of "Nashville," "Short Cuts," "M*A*S*H," "The Player") once noted that there are really only about six or seven different stories, the rest is about character development. I think he was right in that observation about film, and he'd be right if he were talking Patriots-Giants.
