About Kirk Minihane

Kirk Minihane thinks "Slap Shot" is -- without argument -- the best sports movie ever made and is also convinced the 1985-86 Celtics would have finished with a record of 78-4 if they had cared about the regular season. He has been a columnist at WEEI.com since 2009 and is the co-host of "Sports Saturday" on WEEI.

Should we be worried about Rob Gronkowski? Is there a reason the Patriots, according to a report in The Boston Globe, have spiked the Summer of Gronk? Is it as simple as a reminder to get ready for work, or is there something more going on? Because I must be missing something. What, exactly, has changed?

"The people who are responsible for it are the media. The media created this smokescreen behind which Sandusky operated, and then they're trying to blame Paterno." -- Red Sox senior adviser Bill James, during an ESPN Radio interview Saturday

"Nothing was done and Sandusky was allowed to continue with impunity."  Freeh Report, July 12, 2012 Anyone still want to stand up for Joe Paterno? OK, we see you, Matt Millen. Anyone else?

Ready for a first-half Red Sox report card? You're getting one anyway. It's been worse than ugly -- it's been mediocre. This is what .500 looks like, huh? Injuries, underperforming stars, palace intrigue, endless taped segments with Jenny Dell.

Is it OK to hate Ray Allen?

Who's next? Kevin Youkilis, maybe you heard, has been traded. If you had asked a week ago to predict the next Red Sox player to be dealt, Youkilis would have been pretty close to a unanimous pick.

"Although we understand the task of healing is just beginning, today's verdict is an important milestone. The community owes a measure of gratitude to the jurors for their diligent service. Our thoughts and prayers continue to be with the victims and their families."  -- Statement from Paterno family following conviction of Jerry Sandusky Too late. Ten years too late.

I have no idea if the Red Sox clubhouse is toxic.  But I do know, when it comes to winning, it's a completely irrelevant topic. Fun to gossip about? Sure. Semi-telling (at least) about certain individuals? You bet. An easy way to kill four hours on the radio or fill 1,000 or so words in a column? Of course.

So it seems Josh Beckett, on the DL with shoulder discomfort, isn't going to speak to the media anymore.  Good for him. Makes all the sense in the world to me. And as a member of the media I wonder why more guys don't do it.

"If Youk returns in a week and is ready to go, he plays third base. He's been here. It's great that Will has come up and done a good job and we like him a lot and he's a big part of our future. But Youk's on the DL and he didn't lose his job because he got hurt." -- Ben Cherington

Immature. Selfish. Self-destructive. Moronic. Indefensible. All are absolutely accurate if describing Rajon Rondo's chest-bump of referee Marc Davis with 41 seconds left in Sunday's loss to the Hawks. Add this, please: Potentially series-altering.
