About Kirk Minihane

Kirk Minihane thinks "Slap Shot" is -- without argument -- the best sports movie ever made and is also convinced the 1985-86 Celtics would have finished with a record of 78-4 if they had cared about the regular season. He has been a columnist at WEEI.com since 2009 and is the co-host of "Sports Saturday" on WEEI.

Bobby Valentine has finally been fired -- why didn't this happen months ago? -- and that's a very good thing for the Boston Red Sox.

There are 32 days until the 2012 elections. I expect it will get ugly, as it inevitably does. Or uglier, I suppose. Let Mitt Romney attack President Obama for his failures, let Obama bash Romney for his inconsistencies and let it get personal and gossipy and childish and let us act offended and outraged when the mud is flying fastest while we quietly enjoy it. Without the soap opera stuff all we've got is two guys talking about debt ceilings and Simpson-Bowles and who needs that?
Kirk Minihane

Report Card Time and it kind of says a lot about what we've seen over the last decade or so with this franchise that they can put up 45 points in 25 minutes and no one is really screaming about the fact that they put up 45 points in 25 minutes.

Patriots 52, Bills 28. Call it The Redemption of Josh McDaniels. Too soon? A bit much?

The Patriots never lose these games.  Think about it: When the Patriots, with Tom Brady at quarterback, lose regular-season games at home, it's usually to an NFL heavyweight, an A-Lister.

FOXBORO -- What is going on with Wes Welker?
Kirk Minihane

I'm all for conspiracy theories.  I mean it, I can't get enough of them. You think the CIA killed JFK? LBJ was involved? The Mafia? Castro? Maybe you've got J. Edgar Hoover pulling the strings. If you've got a semi-plausible motive, a couple of decent twists and genuine enthusiasm I'm usually all in.

"What an embarrassing thing to say. If I were there right now, I'd punch you right in the mouth. Ha, ha. How's that sound? Is that like I checked out? What an embarrassing thing." -- Bobby Valentine, talking to Glenn Ordway Thursday on The Big Show How did we get here? Who's to blame?
Kirk Minihane
09/04/2012 - 10:38am
So, Ben Cherington and John Henry aren't in Seattle to fire Bobby Valentine. It's a "fact-finding" mission the owner is on, we are told. How much evidence, exactly, does one man need?
Kirk Minihane

Freedom. That is what the Dodgers granted the Red Sox, plain and simple. It's been a couple of days and it's still difficult to believe, isn't it?

Hey, we've finally got the bold move Larry Lucchino promised 33 days ago. Bob McClure out, Randy Niemann in as pitching coach. That should solve everything, right?
Kirk Minihane
08/15/2012 - 2:04am
Are the 2012 Red Sox the most dysfunctional team in history? I'm serious about this -- where else does stuff like this happen? It never ends. And the latest chapter is the most troubling and most telling.

I'm wrong all the time.

“We just have to play better on the field." John Henry to the Boston Globe, 8/4. Not quite. Not even close, actually. How about starting with a look in the mirror?
Kirk Minihane

"He’s been an effective starting pitcher in the American League East this year. However you want to look at it, that’s what he’s been. We’re not doing anything to help us if we take that off the table. We’re trying to improve things. … You’ve got to take the win-loss record with a grain of salt. He’s generally given us a chance to win when he’s gone out there. That’s what we’re looking for."
Kirk Minihane
07/25/2012 - 10:56am
A 49-50 record with a $178 million payroll. Last place in the American League East. Communication issues within his coaching staff. Not the first, second or 456th choice for the job by his general manager.

They share their insights about the differences between player and coaching expectations in Triple-A vs. the majors, while discussing professional development from the perspective of former minor league managers who aspire to similar positions in the big leagues.
