About Kirk Minihane

Kirk Minihane thinks "Slap Shot" is -- without argument -- the best sports movie ever made and is also convinced the 1985-86 Celtics would have finished with a record of 78-4 if they had cared about the regular season. He has been a columnist at WEEI.com since 2009 and is now part of The Dennis & Callahan Show.

In the world of sequels the second part of this list falls somewhere between “The Substitute 2: School’s Out” and Dick Gephardt’s run for President in 2004. But we move on…

What a week in sports!

I’m sick of Jason Varitek.
Kirk Minihane
01/08/2009 - 6:32pm
Interesting year on the Hall of Fame ballot. You’ve got an all-time great (Rickey Henderson), the usual band of solid guys with good cases (Alan Trammell, Tim Raines), the pair that is inching closer to induction (Andre Dawson, Bert Blyleven) and an on the verge with one last shot (Jim Rice).
Kirk Minihane
01/02/2009 - 10:32am
Pretty self-explanatory, just one rule before we get started.
Kirk Minihane
12/19/2008 - 11:01am
Give me some names. Sorry? I’m in the finals. I need to win. And I don’t want to hear about Matt Forte and Jay Cutler. Stop living off those guys. No problem. I’ve got a lock for 100 yards and a TD Sunday. I like it. Just don't give me Lance Moore. Three weeks in a row you've hyped him and he has a whopping 10 catches for 77 yards combined. No problem. Well, a little problem. I really like Lance Moore this week.
Kirk Minihane
12/12/2008 - 11:18am
Probably too late to mention that I did like Pierre Thomas as a start this week. Here are my five fantasy locks for Week 15 (and a bunch of other starts and avoids). Remember, it is playoff time. No loyalty needed. No need to start Larry Johnson over Dominic Rhodes because you used (wasted) a second-rounder on LJ and Rhodes wasn’t drafted. That was August. Sweet August, when the weather was warm and we still had hopes for such TV shows as “My Own Worst Enemy” and “The Ex List”.

Maybe my timing was a little off... Kirk, A Top 36 Keepers list for two weeks? Uh, the last week of the fantasy regular season probably isn’t the best time to figure out if it should be DeAngelo Williams or Greg Jennings. Maybe that would work best, I don’t know, ANYTIME IN THE OFFSEASON? Josh Nashua To be fair, I do have my supporters…

11/27/2008 - 10:18am
Here is the heavily anticipated sequel to last weeks ranking of the top 16 keepers. This may be the single finest Part 2 ever authored that did not include the word “Boogaloo.” Here we go with 17-36 (once again, age is a key factor). 17. Calvin Johnson (WR, Lions)
Kirk Minihane
11/20/2008 - 10:18am
Couple of emails have floated in over the last week or two regarding keepers. I’m frankly not a fan of the keeper format, I prefer to address a fresh group of faces on the first day of mini-camp. Still, I serve at the pleasure of a loyal readership. Most keeper leagues are allowed to protect three guys, and most leagues have 12 teams, so over the next two weeks I’m going to give you the 36 top keeper prospects for 2009 drafts.

Five quick thoughts from Thursday night…

One thing I’ve wanted to do since the column started was to get some different voices from the Fantasy Community in here. This week I managed to land an interview with a true Fantasy Legend, the great Ricardo Montalban. In this first of nine installments, we will discuss his upbringing in Mexico City and his early TV work in “General Electric Theatre” and “Climax!”. Fear not, though, we will eventually get to his role on the show that brings you here each week, Mr. Roarke on “Fantasy Island”.

How about that Chiefs offense on Sunday, huh?
Kirk Minihane
10/23/2008 - 10:18am
Is there a better play in fantasy football this week than the New York Jets defense? If you haven’t been paying attention, here’s what has been going on with the Jets opponent for the week — the Kansas City Chiefs.
Kirk Minihane
10/17/2008 - 10:18am
I know we’re not quite at the mid-point of the season, but I figured now is as good a time as any to take a look at the Patriots from a fantasy perspective.
Kirk Minihane
10/13/2008 - 10:18am
SAN DIEGO—If the Patriots were able to get out of San Diego with a win on Sunday night a more than reasonable argument could be made that New England was still the class of the AFC. With a 4-1 record and an easy schedule, fans could start dreaming of a one seed and maybe, just maybe, start looking at hotel prices in Tampa. Okay, there weren’t any 55-10 wins or 50 TD passes on the horizon, but things seemed back to normal after a solid 30-21 victory over the 49ers last week.
Kirk Minihane
10/09/2008 - 10:18am
If you own Kyle Orton and Peyton Manning you are definitely thinking about starting Orton this week. If another owner offered you Maurice Jones-Drew for Le’Ron McClain you’d probably turn it down. About the only running back that you could trade Laurence Maroney for is Travis “Frank Lucas” Henry. Brett Favre threw for more TD passes in one game (six) than the combined total of Derek Anderson and Matt Hasselbeck for the season thus far (five).
Kirk Minihane
10/06/2008 - 10:18am
SAN FRANCISCO - Maybe all Patriots fans should give a quick thanks for the Bobby Grier Era. While serving as Vice President of Player Personnel for the Patriots from 1997-99, Grier was responsible for three of the worst drafts in club history. Chris Canty, Sedrick Shaw, Tony Simmons, Andy Katzenmoyer, Tebucky Jones and Rod Rutledge were all flat-out stinkers plucked from the collegiate level by Grier, who was shown the door after the 1999 season to make way for the (sort of) former “HC of the NYJ”. A dynasty was born and Grier was never heard from again.

We are four weeks into the NFL season, so I’m going to attempt something that, to my knowledge, has never been done before in any format. It’s a huge risk, but that’s how we experiment over here. I’m sort of the Kinsey of WEEI.com (minus the sadomasochism). What I’m going to do is hand a couple of (wait for it) Quarter-Season Awards. I know, I know. This is unfamiliar ground for us all. Let’s just see how it goes. Remember, these picks are from a fantasy perspective. Most Valuable Player

09/25/2008 - 10:18am
Before get to the mini-mailbag (I’m going to try and answer a few emails each week here) a couple of fantasy thoughts after three weeks… How about Matt Forte leading the NFL in carries? He’s on pace for 389, which would be a HUGE number for a rookie (and would be 11th all-time). I’m sure the Bears will slow down with him at some point, but if he stays healthy he has a real shot at posting 1,800 total yards this season.
Kirk Minihane
09/18/2008 - 10:18am
OK, two weeks in and some things are not so surprising. The NFL’s leading rusher? Adrian Peterson. Terrell Owens is tied for the league lead with three TD catches. Marion Barber and Brian Westbrook are among those who top the NFL in rushing scores with three. The first player to expose his genitalia online? Chris Cooley. (C’mon. wouldn’t he have been a top-five pick to do that before the season started? I guess the other four would’ve been Chad Johnson, TO, Pacman Jones and Monte Kiffin.)
Kirk Minihane
09/10/2008 - 10:18am
I know the company line in fantasy sports is never panic after Week 1. If there is ever a season to challenge that rule, however, it is this one. The loss of Tom Brady (and a host of other stars struggling) and the explosive effort of the rookies has to give even the most seasoned fantasy owner pause. It seems to me that the people are calling for a staggering overreaction to these events. With that in mind, I could try to keep some sense of perspective this week. Or I could just produce a bunch of lists that pass absurd judgments after just 60 minutes of football.

When I was writing hockey cards for the Upper Deck Company (Full disclosure: Although I was the “hockey editor” at UD for over a year, my knowledge of the sport is, at best, limited. I know a ton of facts, such as ... "Ilya Kovlachuk is the only NHL player to net at least 40 goals in each of the last four seasons." Things that fit on the back of a card. But I don’t have a feel for the game at all) there was one player who I never had trouble writing about. Guillaume Latendresse.
Kirk Minihane
08/27/2008 - 10:18am
Two quick thoughts before we get into the rankings.   1: Do not worry about teaming a QB and a WR from the same team. If you already have Tom Brady and you think Wes Welker is the best player available, make the pick.   2: Do not let the bye week play any factor in draft strategy. Again, best player available. Every team in the league is going to have a tough week with byes (just look at Week 4 this season, with the Pats, Colts, Giants and Seahawks off).   The Wide Receivers
