Kirk Minihane thinks "Slap Shot" is -- without argument -- the best sports movie ever made and is also convinced the 1985-86 Celtics would have finished with a record of 78-4 if they had cared about the regular season. Guess What? Tim Wakefield Is Reaching Legendary Status
Two things about Tim Wakefield (the first one you probably won’t care much about, the second you might). 1. For about the last 12 years or so, every time I go to a Sox game Wakefield is pitching. I can’t escape him. I’ve seen him in New York, Seattle, Baltimore, San Francisco, Toronto. I could be wrong, but I’m pretty sure I saw him pitch for the Pittsburgh Crawfords in a 1936 Negro League game vs. the Homestead Grays.

Top 64 Sports Movies, Part II: Much Ado About 'Teen Wolf Too'
So here is Part II. Following last week's entry on the bottom half of the list of the Top 64 Sports Movies, I was surprised at some of the email reaction. The movie I was most asked about? Teen Wolf. For some reason people wanted to know if the tale of one Scott Howard would make the final 32. Will it? Or will I give Teen Wolf Too (featuring the same Chubbs but a different Stiles) a spot? Top 64 Sports Movies: No 'Celtic Pride' Didn't Make The Cut
I was going to call this the 64 Greatest Sports Movies of all time but it became pretty clear that there are nowhere near 64 great sports films. Maybe 30 or so could be argued as great (at most). A couple of things before we get started… (1) There are movies that I have seen on a lot of lists that I cannot count as a sports movie. Gladiator, to me, isn’t a sports movie. Best in Show is not a sports movie. They don’t pass the smell test.

Handicapping Boston's Future: Which Local Sports Figures Will Still Be Here In 2020?
When Paul Pierce was at the free throw line last Friday night Mike Tirico mentioned that Pierce had been with the Celtics forever, since 1998. Eleven years in the bank. That stuck with me for some reason. Tirico was right. In sports now, to stay in one city for 11 years is pretty near remarkable.  Look at 1998 from a Boston sports perspective. How long ago does some of this stuff seem? 1998 Red Sox: Jimy Williams. The Duke. Way Back Wasdin made 45 appearances. Reggie Jefferson and Darren Bragg.

Who Belongs in the Class of 2009?
Interesting year on the Hall of Fame ballot. You’ve got an all-time great (Rickey Henderson), the usual band of solid guys with good cases (Alan Trammell, Tim Raines), the pair that is inching closer to induction (Andre Dawson, Bert Blyleven) and an on the verge with one last shot (Jim Rice).

Fantasy Title Week: Time to Start Shaun Hill?
Give me some names. Sorry? I’m in the finals. I need to win. And I don’t want to hear about Matt Forte and Jay Cutler. Stop living off those guys. No problem. I’ve got a lock for 100 yards and a TD Sunday. I like it. Just don't give me Lance Moore. Three weeks in a row you've hyped him and he has a whopping 10 catches for 77 yards combined. No problem. Well, a little problem. I really like Lance Moore this week.

Five Fantasy Locks for Week 15
Probably too late to mention that I did like Pierre Thomas as a start this week. Here are my five fantasy locks for Week 15 (and a bunch of other starts and avoids). Remember, it is playoff time. No loyalty needed. No need to start Larry Johnson over Dominic Rhodes because you used (wasted) a second-rounder on LJ and Rhodes wasn’t drafted. That was August. Sweet August, when the weather was warm and we still had hopes for such TV shows as “My Own Worst Enemy” and “The Ex List”.

Where Do the Keepers Rank?
Couple of emails have floated in over the last week or two regarding keepers. I’m frankly not a fan of the keeper format, I prefer to address a fresh group of faces on the first day of mini-camp. Still, I serve at the pleasure of a loyal readership. Most keeper leagues are allowed to protect three guys, and most leagues have 12 teams, so over the next two weeks I’m going to give you the 36 top keeper prospects for 2009 drafts.

This week I managed to land an interview with a true Fantasy Legend, the great Ricardo Montalban. In this first of nine installments, we will discuss his upbringing in Mexico City and his early TV work in “General Electric Theatre” and “Climax!”. The Journey to the Middle is Complete For Pats
SAN DIEGO—If the Patriots were able to get out of San Diego with a win on Sunday night a more than reasonable argument could be made that New England was still the class of the AFC. With a 4-1 record and an easy schedule, fans could start dreaming of a one seed and maybe, just maybe, start looking at hotel prices in Tampa. Okay, there weren’t any 55-10 wins or 50 TD passes on the horizon, but things seemed back to normal after a solid 30-21 victory over the 49ers last week.

Week 6: It's Safe To Waive Kyle Eckel Now
If you own Kyle Orton and Peyton Manning you are definitely thinking about starting Orton this week. If another owner offered you Maurice Jones-Drew for Le’Ron McClain you’d probably turn it down. About the only running back that you could trade Laurence Maroney for is Travis “Frank Lucas” Henry. Brett Favre threw for more TD passes in one game (six) than the combined total of Derek Anderson and Matt Hasselbeck for the season thus far (five).

Faulk Still Getting it Done
SAN FRANCISCO - Maybe all Patriots fans should give a quick thanks for the Bobby Grier Era. While serving as Vice President of Player Personnel for the Patriots from 1997-99, Grier was responsible for three of the worst drafts in club history. Chris Canty, Sedrick Shaw, Tony Simmons, Andy Katzenmoyer, Tebucky Jones and Rod Rutledge were all flat-out stinkers plucked from the collegiate level by Grier, who was shown the door after the 1999 season to make way for the (sort of) former “HC of the NYJ”. A dynasty was born and Grier was never heard from again.

Fantasy Football Awards: Where Even Laurence Maroney is a Winner
We are four weeks into the NFL season, so I’m going to attempt something that, to my knowledge, has never been done before in any format. It’s a huge risk, but that’s how we experiment over here. I’m sort of the Kinsey of WEEI.com (minus the sadomasochism). What I’m going to do is hand a couple of (wait for it) Quarter-Season Awards. I know, I know. This is unfamiliar ground for us all. Week 4, Or: Straight Cash Homey for Matt Jones?
Before get to the mini-mailbag (I’m going to try and answer a few emails each week here) a couple of fantasy thoughts after three weeks… How about Matt Forte leading the NFL in carries? He’s on pace for 389, which would be a HUGE number for a rookie (and would be 11th all-time). I’m sure the Bears will slow down with him at some point, but if he stays healthy he has a real shot at posting 1,800 total yards this season.
