About Kirk Minihane

Kirk Minihane thinks "Slap Shot" is -- without argument -- the best sports movie ever made and is also convinced the 1985-86 Celtics would have finished with a record of 78-4 if they had cared about the regular season. He has been a columnist at WEEI.com since 2009 and is now part of The Dennis & Callahan Show.

COLUMNS
Kirk Minihane
12/30/2009 - 8:37am
Is there anything people need more right now than a "Year in Review" column?
Kirk Minihane
12/27/2009 - 8:00pm
Sometimes a little perspective is needed. We can get too close sometimes. Think about it. Before Bill Belichick and Tom Brady arrived, the Patriots had played in the AFC East for 40 years. In those four decades, they won the division five times. In other words, it was actually an event when they finished the season at the top.

In December of 1982 I watched a man dressed as Santa Claus vomit all over the counter of a Papa Gino's in the Billerica Mall. Since then it's been kind of tough to wrap my arms around Christmas.
Kirk Minihane
12/20/2009 - 11:02pm
Admit it. If I had told you an hour before kickoff that (a) Tom Brady would finish with 115 yards passing and a QB rating of 59.1, (b) the Bills would average 4.6 yards rushing and (c) Ryan Fitzpatrick would complete 68 percent of his passes, you would have called that guy who knows that other guy and maybe inquired about the possibility of a (fully legal, I’m sure) wager.
Kirk Minihane
12/10/2009 - 8:20am
Tons of feedback (both in comments and e-mail) off the Bill Belichick column I wrote on Monday. I was surprised that most were in my camp (which is basically this: The guy is still a great coach having a rough year) or at least didn't completely disagree with what I wrote.
Kirk Minihane

"We've got to coach better. Play better. Just have to do a better job." -- Bill Belichick after the Patriots' 22-21 loss to the Dolphins on Sunday. The Patriots are just another team.
Kirk Minihane
12/03/2009 - 8:52am
After a week off for the holiday, the mailbag returns in fine fashion. Two things I can promise here at the 'bag: lots of Patriots talk and almost no sexting. The Monday Night disaster is Topic A this week, and it seems that most of the folks are ready to call it a season. There was a time, not so long ago, when 7-4 would have been cause for a parade on Route 1, but now it is a sign of things gone awry. Plus, we debate Randy Moss vs.
Kirk Minihane
12/01/2009 - 2:44am
For about an hour or so Monday night, I was having flashbacks to the 2001 season. Must’ve been a Superdome thing, I figured. Or seeing Jon Gruden, though this time there was no visor or snow. But then the game started and I still couldn’t shake it.
Kirk Minihane
11/27/2009 - 2:26am
First, let us start with praise for the 2006 Patriots. No, really.
Kirk Minihane
11/18/2009 - 10:47pm
Look, it’s all fourth-and-2 here this week. And I suspect that some may view that as more of a warning than an invitation. I understand. But at least dig in and give the mailbag a shot, even if you are suffering from fourth-and-2 fatigue. Lots of good email from both sides of the argument this week AND I manage to zipper in some Andrea Kramer talk, nominate a mayor for Cougar Town and defend Bruce Springsteen and the Wayans Brothers.
Kirk Minihane
11/16/2009 - 4:19am
Did that just happen? No, really. Did it?
Kirk Minihane
11/09/2009 - 1:21am
Here’s what Sunday’s 27-17 win over the Dolphins means for the Patriots. It’s OK to take a look at the big picture again. First time since the season started when that feels safe, I know. But take a look.
Kirk Minihane
11/05/2009 - 8:36am
We are doing our best to shake the bye week blues here at the mailbag.
Kirk Minihane
11/02/2009 - 2:36am
If I had told you on Dec. 31, 1999, that the next decade for the Red Sox would include seven 90-win seasons and, yes, the end of “The Curse” as well as a second World Series championship, I’m pretty sure the news wouldn’t have come as a galloping shock. Why would it?
Kirk Minihane
10/29/2009 - 6:08am
You’ll get a bye week mailbag and like it.
Kirk Minihane
10/25/2009 - 8:41pm
Here are the two things I think we absolutely know for sure after watching the Patriots beat Iron Mike Sharpe and S.D. Jones over the last two weeks.
Kirk Minihane
10/22/2009 - 9:04am
Pats and Pats and Pats this week in the mailbag. No shock, with the Sox done and the Celtics not yet ready for our full attention.
Kirk Minihane
10/18/2009 - 11:55pm
I know it's almost impossible to comprehend after what we just watched, but sometime in the future the Patriots will be terrible. And I’m not talking 7-9 terrible, either, the kind of season where if a few breaks go your way you win 10 games. I’m talking 2-14, paper bags over your head and a weekly appointment with the lowest announcing duo on the network roster (see: Criqui and Trumpy, 1992) level of hideousness.
Kirk Minihane
10/15/2009 - 7:50am
Report card feedback dominates the mailbag this week, and (brace for shock) the folks aren’t exactly thrilled with the 2009 edition of the hometown nine. It seems that 95 wins isn’t going to do it for the faithful, changes need to be made. Jonathan Papelbon and J.D. Drew receive the brunt of the drubbing here while Jon Lester takes yearbook honors for most popular.
Kirk Minihane
10/13/2009 - 6:22am
Third and final (duh) Red Sox report card of the season. Just a couple of quick notes before we get started … 1. I put almost no weight on the playoffs when it came to grading. I’ll take what a guy did over 162 games vs. what he did (or in most cases did not do) over three games.
Kirk Minihane
10/08/2009 - 6:11am
It’s not easy to jam Terrell Suggs, Chip Caray, the Golden Banana, Bob Newhart, Kate Beckinsale, Midnight Snack, Sammy Morris, Cumberland Farms, Drew Bledsoe, Megan Fox, Kenny Bania and the death of the toupee into one mailbag, but we’ve managed to do it this week. Some solid e-mails from the folks (keep them coming), although most seem to suggest that I may be close to regaining “half-wit” status. To the 'bag we go (and, as always, feel free to e-mail away to kminihane@weei.com) --
Kirk Minihane
10/04/2009 - 9:10pm
Take a deep breath. It’s safe now to stick out your chest a little bit, Patriots Nation. Feel free, for the next week at least, to count your team among the five or six with a legitimate shot to win the Super Bowl (the others? Indy, Pittsburgh, the Giants and yes, the Ravens.) No small feat, considering it seemed from all you read and heard two weeks ago that the end may be upon us. Enjoy the reprieve from the doomsday crew, because you know a 24-17 loss next week at Denver could bring out the 8-8 posse once again.
Kirk Minihane
10/01/2009 - 12:33am
The mailbag returns after a week off and we are determined to avoid any charges of "dogging it."
Kirk Minihane
09/28/2009 - 6:48am
When Randy Moss enters the Pro Football Hall of Fame (I’d guess in 2017, figuring he plays three more years) you’ll hear a lot about 2007 and 1998. There will be talk of Pro Bowls and of his back-to-back seasons with over 100 catches in 2002 and 2003. And when ESPN runs the two-minute highlight package of Moss’ career, you’ll see all the greatest hits — the Thanksgiving show he put on vs. Dallas as a rookie, the one-handed TD catch vs.

Red Sox face uphill battle, but keep Sox Nation interested with offensive surge, 7-22-14

The Sox exploded for 14 runs against Toronto and got home runs from Stephen Drew, Mike Napoli, and 2 from David Ortiz. 7.5 games out of first place seems too big of a mountain to climb, but the Boston Herald's John Tomase reminds fans that the division is terrible, and will likely be won by a team with less than 90 wins.
