About Kirk Minihane

Kirk Minihane thinks "Slap Shot" is -- without argument -- the best sports movie ever made and is also convinced the 1985-86 Celtics would have finished with a record of 78-4 if they had cared about the regular season. He has been a columnist at WEEI.com since 2009 and is now part of The Dennis & Callahan Show.

COLUMNS

Maybe I should be here in praise of Rasheed Wallace.

03/15/2010 - 3:00am
A bunch of questions (and even a few answers) as a nation works on its bracket and CBS works on unfreezing Dan Bonner and Jim Spanarkel ...   OK, Kansas vs. the field. Whom are you taking?

One man’s diary for what turned out to be perhaps the best hockey game ever played. (For a traditional recap of Canada's 3-2 overtime win over Team USA in the men's hockey Olympic gold medal game, click here):

"Honey, don't you understand? Sure, I slept with 19 women. OK, I was wrong. Not huge. I agree. But that was when I wasn't a Buddhist!" What a terrible job by Tiger this morning. Just another train wreck. If that was a round of golf, he shot about 78. Just scarily robotic. They should  have broke out the "Small Wonder" theme song when he walked to the podium.
Kirk Minihane
02/19/2010 - 2:33am
A brisk nine with Tiger before he gives the most heavily-anticipated quasi-press conference in history. All three networks are cutting in live to show this, the first time this has been done for an athlete since Brett Szabo's retirement announcement in July of 1997. 1. Will Tiger give us the Kobe/A-Rod press conference fake cry, or will he actually go The Full Vermeil and break down?

“It’s not right. I think it's all of our jobs to rectify this travesty.” — Bill Walton on Dennis Johnson not being elected to the Basketball Hall of Fame in 2006 And that’s always how I’ve felt about Dennis Johnson and the Hall of Fame.

One man's Super Bowl diary ... 6:00 p.m (EST): I’m a massive fan of Jay-Z and Rihanna’s solo work. To get them together on a Super Bowl pregame show takes care of another Bucket List wish for me.
Kirk Minihane
01/28/2010 - 9:08am
The people have spoken. No surprise that the vast majority of readers disagree with my assertion that Peyton Manning is the best quarterback I have ever seen. But some of the e-mails and comments regarding my column from Monday went  a bit far, I think. Let's just say that I took some hits. I dress like a woman.
Kirk Minihane
01/25/2010 - 8:31am
Why is this going to be tough column for me to write? Let us count the ways … 1. I’m the guy that thought the Colts should have taken Ryan Leaf over him.

What does Mark McGwire’s apology do for Ernie Banks?
Kirk Minihane
01/11/2010 - 12:27am
As you watched Tom Brady run off the field after his touchdown pass to Randy Moss that gave the Patriots a 14-10 lead with 2:42 left in the fourth quarter of Super Bowl XLII, you were witnessing a man at the absolute peak of his greatness.
Kirk Minihane
01/07/2010 - 8:40am
Is it possible that the tears you saw coming from Wes Welker last Sunday were not the result of the pain he was suffering from tearing both the ACL and MCL in his knee just minutes before? Maybe not even the idea that this season (and chance at a Super Bowl) was over — or 2010 as well — was the cause of the sideline ductal issues?
Kirk Minihane
01/03/2010 - 9:33pm
I know you don’t want to believe this, but Julian Edelman is not Wes Welker.
Kirk Minihane
12/30/2009 - 8:37am
Is there anything people need more right now than a "Year in Review" column?
Kirk Minihane
12/27/2009 - 8:00pm
Sometimes a little perspective is needed. We can get too close sometimes. Think about it. Before Bill Belichick and Tom Brady arrived, the Patriots had played in the AFC East for 40 years. In those four decades, they won the division five times. In other words, it was actually an event when they finished the season at the top.
Kirk Minihane
12/24/2009 - 7:55am
In December of 1982 I watched a man dressed as Santa Claus vomit all over the counter of a Papa Gino's in the Billerica Mall. Since then it's been kind of tough to wrap my arms around Christmas.
Kirk Minihane
12/20/2009 - 11:02pm
Admit it. If I had told you an hour before kickoff that (a) Tom Brady would finish with 115 yards passing and a QB rating of 59.1, (b) the Bills would average 4.6 yards rushing and (c) Ryan Fitzpatrick would complete 68 percent of his passes, you would have called that guy who knows that other guy and maybe inquired about the possibility of a (fully legal, I’m sure) wager.
Kirk Minihane
12/10/2009 - 8:20am
Tons of feedback (both in comments and e-mail) off the Bill Belichick column I wrote on Monday. I was surprised that most were in my camp (which is basically this: The guy is still a great coach having a rough year) or at least didn't completely disagree with what I wrote.
Kirk Minihane
12/06/2009 - 10:45pm
"We've got to coach better. Play better. Just have to do a better job." -- Bill Belichick after the Patriots' 22-21 loss to the Dolphins on Sunday. The Patriots are just another team.
Kirk Minihane
12/03/2009 - 8:52am
After a week off for the holiday, the mailbag returns in fine fashion. Two things I can promise here at the 'bag: lots of Patriots talk and almost no sexting. The Monday Night disaster is Topic A this week, and it seems that most of the folks are ready to call it a season. There was a time, not so long ago, when 7-4 would have been cause for a parade on Route 1, but now it is a sign of things gone awry. Plus, we debate Randy Moss vs.
Kirk Minihane
12/01/2009 - 2:44am
For about an hour or so Monday night, I was having flashbacks to the 2001 season. Must’ve been a Superdome thing, I figured. Or seeing Jon Gruden, though this time there was no visor or snow. But then the game started and I still couldn’t shake it.
Kirk Minihane
11/27/2009 - 2:26am
First, let us start with praise for the 2006 Patriots. No, really.
Kirk Minihane
11/18/2009 - 10:47pm
Look, it’s all fourth-and-2 here this week. And I suspect that some may view that as more of a warning than an invitation. I understand. But at least dig in and give the mailbag a shot, even if you are suffering from fourth-and-2 fatigue. Lots of good email from both sides of the argument this week AND I manage to zipper in some Andrea Kramer talk, nominate a mayor for Cougar Town and defend Bruce Springsteen and the Wayans Brothers.
