About Kirk Minihane

Kirk Minihane thinks "Slap Shot" is -- without argument -- the best sports movie ever made and is also convinced the 1985-86 Celtics would have finished with a record of 78-4 if they had cared about the regular season. He has been a columnist at WEEI.com since 2009 and is now part of The Dennis & Callahan Show.

COLUMNS
Kirk Minihane
05/25/2010 - 5:13am
Ten thoughts from a Game 4 that featured the impossible -- several Magic players actually make eye contact with Stan Van Gundy during the pregame speech. Should have known the Celtics were in trouble at that point.
Kirk Minihane
05/23/2010 - 12:26pm
Ten thoughts from a Game 3 that went a long way in securing the legacy of Vince Carter. Dwight Howard still has time to recover, but there aren't many days of basketball sunshine left for Vince. If my season (and best chance at a title) is on the line, not sure I'd be settling for 18-footers with 15 seconds left on the shot clock. Turns out that all the worst things we thought about Carter as a player are probably true.
Kirk Minihane
05/19/2010 - 9:31pm
With a quarter of the Red Sox' season in the books (give or take a game,) I figured it would be as good a time as any for the first report card of 2010.

Ten Thoughts following a Game 2 that could spell the end of the season for the most annoying PA announcer in America ...

One man's uneducated guess at five headlines you'll be reading over the next week … 1. Allen (28 points) leads Celtics to 90-78 win and 2-1 lead over Orlando

Ten thoughts from a Game 1 that made us wonder if Rasheed Wallace is a bargain ...

Ten thoughts from a Game 6 in which the Celtics put an end to the Cavaliers' season and started what will be the most annoying 47 days in ESPN history ...

05/12/2010 - 12:33am
Ten thoughts from a Game 5 that could be remembered as last basketball game of significance ever played in the city of Cleveland.
Kirk Minihane
05/11/2010 - 12:42am
OK, so Mike McGwire and Sammy Sooser didn't turn out to be men of virtue. It hurts, I understand. But at least we'll always have Jason Varitek splitting the uprights. An ionic moment such as that one will be in our hearts and minds forever.  Ah, Mumbles.
Kirk Minihane
05/10/2010 - 3:18am
One man's guess at five headlines you'll be reading over the next week ... 1. Bergeron (two goals) powers Bruins past Flyers and into Eastern Conference finals House money.
Kirk Minihane
05/08/2010 - 3:32am
Ten questions and answers following a Boston Sports Friday to Forget...  (1) OK, the Celtics get humiliated, Josh Beckett channels Rick Ankiel and the Bruins can't seal the deal (to quote Gob Bluth) in Philly. Which was the worst performance in this parade of stinkers?
Kirk Minihane
05/05/2010 - 3:10am
All it took was a couple of wins on Monday night for me to start up the Overreaction Machine and fire up 10 questions and answers on which team -- the Celtics or Bruins -- has the better chance to win a championship. Would this have been an insane topic for a column even two weeks ago? Yes. Does it still feel a little forced now? You bet.

On a night when David Stern handed LeBron James his second MVP trophy, another coronation took place at Quicken Loans Arena.

One man's guess at five headlines you'll be reading over the next week ... 1. Pierce scores 36 in Game 4 OT win, Celtics-Cavs now tied at 2-2
Kirk Minihane
04/30/2010 - 6:55am
I think the Celtics and Cavaliers each own one huge edge when you break down the two teams as we head into what I think will be a seven-game playoff series.
Kirk Minihane
04/29/2010 - 2:01am
On April 18, Jon Lester allowed seven hits and seven runs in six innings to take the loss against the Rays. His record stood at 0-2 and his ERA was 8.44. When he stood in front of the assembled media after the game he did so as a pitcher at a crossroads. While the reason for his struggles may have been a mystery (usual slow start? Mechanical problems? Lack of confidence? An injury?) there was no layer of doubt surrounding the message from the left-hander.

04/26/2010 - 10:58pm
Now that the NFL draft is (finally) over it's time for football to take a little hiatus from our day-to-day lives until training camp rolls around in a couple of months.  But when the season previews begin get ready for something new.
Kirk Minihane
04/26/2010 - 12:41am
By saying almost nothing of consequence in his post-game press conference following a 7-6 loss by the Red Sox to the Orioles on Sunday, Tim Wakefield said everything about where he stands on being removed from the starting rotation. Here's a little taste of his Q&A session with the media folk: Thoughts on going to the bullpen?
Kirk Minihane
04/23/2010 - 1:00am
Is this how it ends for Tim Wakefield?
Kirk Minihane
04/21/2010 - 10:52pm
I don't know how else to put it, so I'll just say it as simply as I can. It seems that Roger Goodell went into his chambers, crunched the numbers and decided that four games is ample punishment for buying a couple of 20-year-old girls some alcohol.  Maybe it is, maybe it isn't. I just don't know how he figured it out. Could be he has a chart similar to the one that shows general managers how many points each draft pick is worth when weighing a potential trade. But I suppose there must be some system.
Kirk Minihane
04/21/2010 - 5:38am
The playoff fate of the 2009-10 Boston Celtics remains very much in doubt. But after Tuesday, two things seem to be clear when you consider how the rest of this postseason will play out for the Celtics. Glen Davis will play a major role. And Rasheed Wallace will not.
Kirk Minihane
04/19/2010 - 5:32pm
Are we there yet?  Ready to press the panic button? Believe me, I want to buy into the "small sample size" argument. And I understand that probably every team in baseball, at some point this season, will have at least one stretch where it loses nine of 13 games.
Kirk Minihane
04/18/2010 - 3:55am
It should have been a night of redemption for Kevin Garnett. After sitting out the entire 2009 playoffs with a knee injury, Garnett made his return to the postseason on Saturday night in Game 1 of the first-round series with the Miami Heat.
Kirk Minihane
04/14/2010 - 10:52pm
Is it fair to call a season that saw the Boston Celtics win 50 games and the Atlantic Division (by 11 games) a disappointment? You and I know the answer, of course, is "yes." This season was work for the Celtics fan. The joy of two years ago is gone. Goodbye to Ubuntu and hello to Rasheed Wallace. Never has 50 wins felt so close to utter failure.
Kirk Minihane
04/13/2010 - 1:23pm
I'm not sure if David Ortiz is finished.
