About Kirk Minihane

Kirk Minihane thinks "Slap Shot" is -- without argument -- the best sports movie ever made and is also convinced the 1985-86 Celtics would have finished with a record of 78-4 if they had cared about the regular season. He has been a columnist at WEEI.com since 2009 and is the co-host of "Sports Saturday" on WEEI.

"I have not watched it. I've gotten the reports. I'm disappointed with all the profanity. I think Rex can make his points without all that." --Tony Dungy, August 16

It's fair to be skeptical about a Shaq/Celtics marriage.

Ten questions (and answers) as we ready for a press conference to celebrate the signing of a 38-year-old center. The last time the Celtics brought in a former All-Star center at age 38? Artis Gilmore in 1988. Let's hope this goes a little better. Johnny Kelley was faster at mile 24 in the 1992 Boston Marathon. And how about this? Per the Celtics PR staff: "Mr. O'Neal will not answer any questions about Kazaam but would be thrilled to discuss Steel at length."

Ready? Want to play the "how can we catch the Rays or Yankees" game? OK, here goes. If the Tampa Bay Rays play .500 ball for the rest of the year, the Red Sox would have to go 33-20 to make the playoffs.

For those bemoaning the idea that Shaquille O'Neal will soon be a member of the Boston Celtics, let me say first that I understand the concern.

Be warned: This is a question born in the world of dramatic overreaction within the internet community. But here goes. Is Jonathan Papelbon going to be the Red Sox closer for the rest of the season?

A couple of weeks ago in a midseason Red Sox report card I posed this question: Taking everything into account -- age, durability, established performance level, postseason history, AL vs. NL, current contract status -- is there a pitcher in baseball you would absolutely trade Jon Lester for?

Reggie Lewis died 17 years ago Tuesday. Hard to believe that he would be 44 years old now, probably be six or seven years out of the league. Maybe he'd be a coach, maybe he'd be sitting next to Mike and Tommy, maybe he would have moved into the front office. Who knows?

There is probably nothing to the Chris Paul for Rajon Rondo talk that's been in the air for the last 24 hours or so. An internet creation that has had some legs. Probably nothing more than that, right? Well …

One man's guess as to how the 2010 season will play out in New England …. Week 1: Home vs. Bengals

Report card time. We last handed out grades at the quarter-season mark (May 19), and much has changed. At that time the Sox were doing the lambada with .500, and it seemed that we might be headed for a lost season.

I'll stick to building ships. -- George Steinbrenner at his introductory press conference as owner, promising to stay away from the day-to-day operations of the Yankees in January 1973. What kind of owner wins seven World Series and 11 pennants in 37 years?

On page 190 of the new book "Hellbound On His Trail" -- Hampton Sides' brilliant account of the international manhunt of James Earl Ray following the assassination of Martin Luther King -- a then 26-year-old Jesse Jackson gives a statement to a Memphis reporter at the Lorraine Motel just minutes after the shooting of the civil rights giant.

One man's account of the end of a franchise, but the start of a new-found respect for ESPN. OK, maybe just the end of a franchise. 9:00 p.m. (EST): I always knew that hell would start with a Stuart Scott voiceover.  9:01: Now another voiceover, only with a guy that sounds like a mix of James Earl Jones, Dikembe Mutombo and Vince McMahon. Creepiest ESPN moment since Namath/Kobler.

The Celtics and Shaquille O'Neal? I guess it's possible, as long as everyone is realistic. That, of course, starts with Shaq himself. And that's where the problem begins.

Heading into Monday night's series opener with the Rays, Kevin Youkilis led the American League in runs (64). He was third in on-base percentage and fourth in slugging. There were four players in the AL with an OPS of 1.000 or better, and Youkilis was one of them.

Why did Doc Rivers shock the world (OK, that's a slight exaggeration) and decide to come back for another year as head coach of the Celtics? Here's the five best reasons I could come up with … 1. He may never have a better chance to win another title

Here's one man's running diary of the 2010 NBA draft, where cash consideration happens … 7:30 p.m. (EST): I was terrified ESPN wouldn't kick off the coverage with a music video/montage. Nice to have the fears allayed with the sounds of Michael Buble.

Doc Rivers strikes me as a low-maintenance guy. I don't think he's the type to drag out a "Will he or won't he?" for the summer. Just not how he does things. Can't think of a single example over the 2,000-plus days that Glenn Rivers has been HC of the BC where he has been the story.
