About Kirk Minihane

Kirk Minihane thinks "Slap Shot" is -- without argument -- the best sports movie ever made and is also convinced the 1985-86 Celtics would have finished with a record of 78-4 if they had cared about the regular season. He has been a columnist at WEEI.com since 2009 and is the co-host of "Sports Saturday" on WEEI.

We all knew the Patriots would beat the Texans on Sunday. You, me, Dan Shaughnessy, Tom E. Curran and everyone else. Sure, there were the usual (though not particularly well-represented) contrarians and the idea that anything can happen in any game (as we sure learned Saturday night -- and has anyone located John Fox's testicles yet?), but the outcome of Patriots-Texans II seemed as certain as a playoff game could be.

Rajon Rondo has played in 466 regular-season games and 92 playoff games. This is his seventh NBA season. He is 26 years old, will turn 27 on February 22nd.

I think the Patriots are going to beat the Texans on Sunday. You think the Patriots are going to beat the Texans on Sunday.

"I’m happy here. My family is happy here. We’re excited about what’s ahead of us here in the playoffs, and to talk about any other opportunities at this point is, to me, irrelevant, because I’m totally focused on this season and what this season holds."
Kirk Minihane

I have no idea which team will represent the National Football Conference (though the Seahawks sure look like a really, really tough out) but I know who they'll be facing. The Patriots are going back to the Super Bowl.

Is Curt Schilling a Hall of Famer?

When the Patriots failed to convert a fourth-and-1 from their own 12-yard line with 2:24 left in the fourth quarter on Sunday night against the 49ers, the game essentially was over and the chances at a top two seed and first-round bye in the AFC playoffs were in serious jeopardy.
Kirk Minihane
12/17/2012 - 9:05am
"You can say a lot of things about me as a coach, OK? I'm sure you do and so do a lot of other people. But I'm just telling you guys something -- one thing I'm not is scared. ... I'm not apologizing to anyone for being aggressive and trying to win." -- Bill Belichick, 2009 (talking to his team and captured in "A Football Life")

"Our expectation is Jacoby will be here and be our center fielder." -- Ben Cherington, Dec. 5, 2012
Kirk Minihane
12/11/2012 - 9:04am
In their last six games the Patriots have scored 255 points (more than eight teams in the league have scored this season) and have allowed 111. There is peaking at the right time and then there is this.

Real nice seven-day stretch for CBS sports both nationally and locally, huh?

Just because we live in a world where Shane Victorino can make $39 million over three years doesn't mean it's OK to pay Shane Victorino $39 million over three years.

"People want to find a crack, a little sliver in his game ... The kid is a Hall of Fame player, this is a great record and people should stop the nonsense and we should stop propagating this thing." -- Tommy Heinsohn

First, before we dig deep into all things karma, let's start with this: I don't want to hear about running up the score. That wasn't Woburn vs. Reading at Gillette on Sunday.
Kirk Minihane
11/15/2012 - 10:30am
Three Patriots questions asked and answered on a Thursday as we all wait for Sunday and the chance to finally hear Jim Nantz and Phil Simms realize a dream and announce a game from Gillette Stadium ...
Kirk Minihane
11/13/2012 - 8:22am
I suppose it's important to note that the Patriots did beat the Bills on Sunday. I was there, I saw Patriots 37, Bills 31 with 0:00 on the clock.
Kirk Minihane
11/11/2012 - 10:47pm
There are a million Patriots apologists and at least as many professional and amateur contrarians, but after watching Patriots 37, Bills 31, we can all get together and agree that this defense isn't nearly good enough to win a Super Bowl as presently constituted, right?
Kirk Minihane
11/08/2012 - 12:26pm
Probably by now you've seen the Sporting News poll of 103 NFL players earlier this week that asked this question:  Who is the most overrated head coach in the NFL today?

It's so easy to take Tom Brady for granted.

Here's what we can indisputably take away from Heat 120, Celtics 107: These two teams still hate each other. That's it, that's all and it's really kind of a wonderful thing, no?
Kirk Minihane
10/30/2012 - 7:02am
"I'm always going to be a Celtic no matter what." -- Ray Allen Ray Allen wants to have it both ways.

"I know what I’m doing." -- Frank Spaziani, Oct. 24 I think we're all realistic about the ceiling for Boston College football, right?
