About Kirk Minihane

Kirk Minihane thinks "Slap Shot" is -- without argument -- the best sports movie ever made and is also convinced the 1985-86 Celtics would have finished with a record of 78-4 if they had cared about the regular season. He has been a columnist at WEEI.com since 2009 and is the co-host of "Sports Saturday" on WEEI.

Let us rid ourselves of any confusion: Tim Tebow will never be a successful NFL quarterback. His days of quarterbacking relevance, save for a fluky half season, ended when he left Urban Meyer and the SEC.

Ready to get lost in a wilderness of ifs? If the Red Sox are still in playoff contention two months from now, if the Phillies continue to stumble, if the price isn't absurdly steep, if health isn't a factor, if parties agree to be moved and if ownership is indeed serious about the possibility of a World Series (imagine that conversation 90 days ago) pursuing Cliff Lee in a trade is a must.

I can't figure out Jacoby Ellsbury.  That's not exactly right, actually. Turns out if you go to his baseball-reference page and simply cross out 2011, you'll get closer to consistency, closer to the answer.

It would be one thing if Doc Emrick were your play-by-play man for Game 1 of Bruins-Rangers on Thursday night.

The Celtics are going to do this.

The use of the word "courage" has been used, shall we say, quite liberally over the last couple of years. Movie stars have it because they take on a risky, non-commercial project. Musicians have it when they go outside their comfort zone in a new album. Journalists (yup, using that term loosely) nod and smile breathlessly as Matt Damon or Beyonce or whomever the flavor of the month is yaps on and on about how an artist cannot give into fear.

Walk me through this. The Red Sox are 15-7, tied for the best record in the American League. There are of course very many reasons for this superb start, but somewhere close to the top has been the work of Andrew Bailey, a total wipeout in Year 1 in Boston but dominant so far in Year 2, saving five games (out of six chances) with a 1.59 ERA, 0.79 WHIP and 20 strikeouts in 11 1/3 innings pitched.
Kirk Minihane
04/18/2013 - 10:52pm
Where do we go from here?  That's the question, right? It will never be the same in Boston after what happened on Monday afternoon, that's what we've read and heard over the last three days.
Kirk Minihane
04/11/2013 - 5:54am
Of course Wade Boggs should have his number retired by the Red Sox. Is this even really a debate?
Kirk Minihane

Why doesn't Boston hate Rick Pitino anymore?
Kirk Minihane
03/27/2013 - 6:22am
Here's the Jackie Bradley Jr. question, plain and simple: Are you willing to give up a full season in 2019 for nine games in 2013?  That's it, nothing more and nothing less. The idea that the Boston Red Sox should punt a full year of club control over what sure looks to be a potential star in what will be the absolute prime of his career in exchange for nine games is, of course, as foolish and short-sighted as it sounds.
Kirk Minihane

How did we get here? At 4 p.m on Tuesday -- barring a final-hour agreement between Wes Welker and the Patriots -- the player with the most catches over a six-year period in NFL history is going to be a free agent.

"They ask you like, ‘Do you have a girlfriend?’ Are you married?’ Do you like girls?" -- University of Colorado tight end Nick Kasa Is it the NFL's business if someone is gay?

Remember how it used to work? The Patriots would go deep into the postseason -- maybe to the Super Bowl, maybe just short, but almost always to late January -- before handing the sports keys to the city over to the Red Sox, who would take command until October and pass it back to the Patriots, who would already be four or five weeks into another 13-, 14-win season.

"What next level is there? That's the thing that frustrates me. People don't consider me an ace or don't consider me a front-line starter. Well, when there are two other pitchers in all of baseball who (won at least 15 games four straight seasons), what am I? That's my argument to it. What extra level is there to it? Am I supposed to win 25 games every year? It's not possible." -- Jon Lester, Feb. 9
Kirk Minihane
02/07/2013 - 9:01am
In 567 games (regular season and playoffs), Rajon Rondo has totaled 6,587 points, 4,788 assists, 2,710 rebounds, 1,094 steals, 27 triple-doubles, an NBA title, another finals appearance and four All-Star Game selections.
