About Kerry Byrne

Kerry J. Byrne created the revolutionary Cold, Hard Football Facts concept and is the nation's foremost authority on the "gridiron lifestyle" of beer, food and football. He also is a food and drinks writer for the Boston Herald and has spent much of his "career" traveling around the beer-making capitals of the United States and Europe while writing for Esquire, Yankee Magazine, Penthouse (yes, that Penthouse), Cargo, America Online, Epicurious.com, Boston magazine, All About Beer and many other newspapers and magazines, most of them highly disreputable.

Is the “Peyton Manning is the Greatest of All Time” debate finally over? Let’s hope so. It would be nice to turn on a radio or open a newspaper again without feeling nauseous.

There are three things a team and its fans must do to ensure a successful Super Bowl Sunday: win the passing battle, win the turnover battle and, naturally, win the tailgate battle. It looks like one team is poised to do all three on Sunday. It starts, as every NFL game does, with the respective quarterbacks. Drew Brees vs. The Chosen One

Is the Patriots dynasty over? That’s been one of the big questions around New England in the wake of another disappointing end to another disappointing season — a fifth straight year without a Super Bowl victory.
Kerry Byrne
01/20/2010 - 11:04am
A certain piece published in this space last week about New England’s need to toughen up and return to its old-school roots went over about as well as Martha Coakley’s Senate campaign.

Remember a few years ago, when fans and pigskin “pundits” and even a certain quarterback, not satisfied by winning titles every year, clamored for a big-name wide receiver? ’Member that?
Kerry Byrne
01/06/2010 - 8:11am
The AFC playoff contingent this year is harder to read than Bill Belichick’s game face. Did he just beat the Colts for the AFC title, or did he just lose his top receiver to a catastrophic knee injury? Damned if we know, at least not this year.

Frame it and put it up on the mantel. The Decade of the Patriots is over. What a decade! And what a gift to the pigskin public, here in Boston and around the nation. Love ‘em or hate ‘em, perhaps no team in history produced a stretch quite like it, or sparked the same depths of local love and national animosity that the Patriots did in the 20-aughts.
Kerry Byrne
12/22/2009 - 11:30pm
Somewhere along the way, the pigskin “punditry” has forgotten that the best quarterback in football plays in New England.

Buck up, little camper. It’s not so bad.
Kerry Byrne
12/08/2009 - 11:27pm
We’ve witnessed a Christmas miracle this year. We’ve watched Bill Belichick’s powerful Patriots morph into Ron Erhardt’s pathetic Patriots right before our very eyes. Erhardt, you might remember, coached the most infuriating team in franchise history: the 2-14 Patriots of 1981. It was a team that should have been much better than its record indicated: The 1981 Patriots were middle-of-the-road in most statistical indicators, scoring 322 points that year while surrendering 370 points.

It’s official: the days of Bill Belichick the “defensive genius” are over.
Kerry Byrne
11/24/2009 - 2:41pm
The typical turkey on television or radio is incapable of analyzing football teams beyond a handful of headline-making players on offense: the 40-year-old gunslinger quarterback, the fumble-prone runner, the loudmouthed wide receiver. These players win all the awards, score all the touchdowns, date all the starlets, marry all the supermodels, do all the Oreo commercials and gain all the attention from the media.

They call it the fog of war: the swirl of chaos that makes it hard to tell fact from fantasy in the aftermath of battle.

The Tom Brady-Peyton Manning rivalry is so good that someday it will deserve its own wing in the Pro Football Hall of Fame.

The Cold, Hard Football Facts, if they had emotion, would love Miami’s Wildcat offense.
Kerry Byrne
10/27/2009 - 10:15pm
So, what do you think? Back in the summer, would you have taken a 5-2 record seven games into the season, as Tom Brady attempted to get his sea legs under him? Would you have felt good about wins over then-unbeaten Baltimore and Atlanta? Would you have lived with close losses in the Meadowlands and at Mile High?

A few questions about the Patriots as we contemplate the Zen of 59-0 and consider the severity of the international thrashing the winless Buccaneers are going to suffer in London on Sunday:
Kerry Byrne
10/13/2009 - 11:37pm
The local pigskin punditry is twisting itself into logistical knots trying to come up with the reasons for New England’s inconsistent 3-2 start. Let me put an end to the mystery. The problems with the Patriots can be summed with six words: Bill Belichick has lost his mojo.
Kerry Byrne
10/07/2009 - 7:06am
With all due apologies to the once-great Al Davis, the 2009 Patriots seem to have stolen his most famous catch-phrase: “Just Win, Baby!”
Kerry Byrne
09/30/2009 - 1:08am
Did we miss something here? Or did the Patriots beat a 2-0 Atlanta team pretty handily on Sunday? Judging by the reactions of much of Patriots Nation, you would have thought that Tom Brady was knocked out with an injury, that another season was destined for failure and that they had cut off beer sales at Gillette at the end of the first possession.
Kerry Byrne
09/23/2009 - 8:30am
An unusual dependency on Tom Brady pretty much describes the Patriots' problems heading into Week 3 of the 2009 season. New England should have learned its lesson back in 2007 — but more on that later. Instead the Patriots, and their fans, were lulled into a false sense of security by Brady's late-game performance in the Week 1 win over the Bills. He returned from a year away from the game and, with an apparently hopeless outlook against the Bills, delivered a pair of late touchdowns to lift the Patriots to an improbable win.
Kerry Byrne
09/16/2009 - 9:18am
Tom Brady put his stamp on the 2009 season so quickly that he could get a job processing passports at Terminal E if this quarterbacking thing doesn’t work out. New England’s signal-caller overcame a year of rust, a shaky three quarters and a surprisingly spirited effort from the hard-luck Bills to spark one of the average, ordinary inexplicable victories that have defined his career.
Kerry Byrne
09/09/2009 - 10:55am
Worried about life after Richard Seymour? Don’t worry. Consider one of the signature battles in New England football lore. Consider the Colts-Patriots playoff game at snowy Gillette Stadium on a frigid night in January 2005.
Kerry Byrne

The Cold, Hard Football Facts like to get their hands around things. Usually those things we like to touch are filled with frothy golden liquid, coated in delectable Buffalo sauce or constrained so suggestively beneath a skimpy bikini top. In the case of the Patriots, the thing we all need to get our hands around as we head into the 2009 season is the state of the New England pass defense. We also need to come to grips with, as we do below, the massive turnover in the Patriots secondary since last year.

02/05/2009 - 7:00am
Dear Coach Belichick: Far be it for me to tell you how to run your football team, Bill. But apparently, I’m the only one armed with enough data, evidence and Cold, Hard Football Facts to look you straight in the eye and say you effed it all up over the past couple years.
