The Boston Red Sox and Liverpool Football Club appeared ready for merger under the roof of the current Red Sox ownership New England Sports Ventures (NESV) after the Liverpool board of directors voted unanimously 3-2 to sell the English Premier League club for the bargain basement purchasing fee of £300 million (just over $476 million U.S.

The wonderful game of soccer’s time for a major overhaul has come. The 2010 South Africa World Cup showed how far the advances in technology have come with the ESPN camera angles. It also showed just how big a need there is for the game itself to be remedied by technology, as there were far too many big decision calls that were missed.

With the semifinals set for this week, it’s time to look at who has impressed the most in the 2010 World Cup (stats are through the quarterfinals): The formation that I created for my best XI is an attacking Christmas tree – the 4-3-2-1 in front of the keeper. These may not necessarily be the best 11 players in the world right now, but they are the players that I think have played the best in South Africa and have been the largest inspiration to their teams with points given for creativity, imagination and the fortitude to go forward.

I like many of our fellow American soccer fans needed to take a day to digest that quite frustrating lost opportunity and collect my thoughts. There are plenty of talking points from the game; Bob Bradley's selections, the poor central defending, the lack of finishing, how quickly the team was able to recover from the Algerian win, how they performed as favorites, and how two very key injuries last fall changed the fabric of the team.

A couple days back the very funny WEEI.com columnist Jerry Thornton had a poignant piece about soccer fans in which he leveled about why his own personal interests in sports don’t fall in line with the beautiful game, but more on point why he has had a growing distaste for the soccer fan in general.

The Group Stage games are over and although the first set of games for each team seemed to be largely boring as teams got more comfortable, realized they had to get points in specific games as well as goals because of the emphasis on the top two tie-breakers – goal differential and goals for – we actually saw more free-flowing games.

The first games are in the books (in the case of Uruguay and South Africa, the first two). To be blunt, the first round has been largely disappointing, as many teams have been tentative in feeling each other out with a lack of flair, or “Joga Bonita” (play beautifully). Now that many teams will be desperate for points, one can only hope the goals start to fly in. Let’s get to the rankings.   1. GERMANY

I’m not sure what American soccer fans were anticipating more, the start of the World Cup or their team’s first big match with European giant England.

It has been said that England would win the World Cup if American starting goalkeeper Tim Howard was manning the pipes for the Three Lions – I agree wholeheartedly with that statement.

Fairly or unfairly, the United States has had to face a top-eight FIFA ranked World Cup team in the first game of the group stage in each of the past three World Cups – Germany in 1998 (2-0 loss), Portugal in 2002 (3-2 win), and the Czech Republic in 2006 (3-0 loss).
