About Joe Haggerty
Joe Haggerty has covered the Boston Bruins and the NHL for the Woburn Daily Times Chronicle over the last six seasons and does actually remember the last time the Black and Gold were favored in a playoff series. Haggerty grew up in a hockey family, but the closest he came to playing ice hockey was enrolling in an ice skating class. Haggs is old enough to remember when TV guys like Mike Milbury, Rick Middleton and Andy Brickley skated for the B’s, but still young enough to think that Milan Lucic could be the next Big Hockey Thing in Boston.

The conversations have already sprung up all around the Red Sox in the final month of baseball. Will Jon Lester wind up seizing the ball in Game One of the playoffs if Josh Beckett continues to look so Un-Beckett-like in September? Will the Sox continue to roll out their postseason dominance against the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim as the two teams appear headed for a crash course to play each other in the Division Series once again?

Phil Kessel is no longer hanging around in the Boston area waiting for a deal. The highly skilled Bruins forward has returned to his native Wisconsin for the last gasps of summer, surrounding himself with family and friends while his hockey fate remains unknown in Boston.

Billy Wagner said that he thought he’d have a hard time breaking 90-mph when he was warming up in the bullpen Sunday afternoon, but the 38-year-old lefty flashed a glimpse of what could be in store for the rest of the season.

All of the baseball chatter around Fenway yesterday afternoon centered around a left-handed reliever, and rightfully so. Billy Wagner finally agreed to waive his no-trade clause at the last minute and accept a deal to come to the Red Sox. But it was another lefty reliever who once again quietly went about his business putting out fires in Tuesday night’s 6-3 win over the White Sox at the Fens. (Recap.)

It seemed like just yesterday that Red Sox hitters were persevering through an epic 31-inning scoreless streak against the Yankees, and then wilting in the Texas heat with players like Brian Anderson, Casey Kotchman and Jason Varitek rounding out the bottom of their challenged lineup. What a difference 10 days can make.

The visiting clubhouse at Fenway Park didn’t appear much like the home base of operations for a New York Yankees team with the best record in all of Major League Baseball on Saturday afternoon.

They say that Bruins history repeats itself, and that’s been a very good thing for the hockey club when it comes to the Bart and Scott Bradley. The late Barton Bradley was Boston’s chief amateur scout for more than 20 years under the tutelage of Harry Sinden, and the elder Bradley – a resident in the Vancouver area that specialized in Western Canadian hockey players – insisted that Sinden trade for a raw young power forward named Cam Neely.

Victor Martinez thought he had his first official “Red Sox moment” when he pulverized a Phil Coke fastball for a two-run homer at Yankee Stadium last weekend. The two-run bomb gave Boston a lead late in the game and mercifully snapped a 31 inning scoreless streak of futility. But the Yanks came back to win that Sunday night game before a national audience in heartbreaking fashion, and the man called V-Mart was robbed of his first big moment for Boston.

NEW YORK – Sometimes the best lessons are also the ones learned hardest, with pain and disappointment as the merciless tour guides. Such is the plight with Daniel Bard, who was coasting along with otherworldly ease and precision during his rookie year working out of the bullpen for the Red Sox. The 24-year-old right-hander is blessed with free, easy velocity that touches 100-mph and a hard breaking ball that’s gained in life and movement since teaming up with pitching coach John Farrell. The tools are there.

NEW YORK – The similarities are almost too eerie to comprehend. Picture two different seasons in recent Red Sox history that feature some fairly different personnel, but also appear to be traveling on parallel paths. During Season A, the Red Sox were in first place in the AL East as late as Aug. 2 before injuries mounted, performance fell off the table and the Olde Towne Team descended into a tailspin punctuated with meaningless September games followed by an entire winter of aching discontent.

NEW YORK -- On a day when the Red Sox finally admitted they had some big problems in John Smoltz’s epic ineffectiveness and Jed Lowrie’s troublesome left wrist, the biggest problem for the Boston Baseball Bunch was the glaring issue supposedly addressed when GM Theo Epstein pulled the trigger on a deal that landed Victor Martinez from Cleveland.

NEW YORK -- Johnny Damon has watched teammates both old and new endure a steroid gauntlet that is fraught with peril and ruined reputations. It hasn’t gotten any easier for the former Red Sox centerfielder each time he’s watched it happen anew to somebody with whom he played ball. The Yanks outfielder spoke with David Ortiz during batting practice at Yankee Stadium on Thursday night, and got the impression that his former Boston teammate hadn’t a clue that he was a member of the so-called “list of 103 players.”

It still feels like just yesterday that villain du jour Scott Walker was breaking the collective back of Bruins Nation, and Tim Thomas followed the spine-breaker by literally speed-skating off the ice after giving up Walker’s overtime goal to the Carolina Panthers inside a shocked-silent TD Bank Garden. The pain is still there for plenty of B’s fans, but it was three long months ago.

It was sometimes difficult on Wednesday afternoon to imagine the kind of Fenway snow globe that will take effect when the Bruins and the Philadelphia Flyers on Yawkey Way on Jan. 1 during the 2010 Bridgestone Winter Classic. It was 80 plus degrees and sunny with blue skies at the Lyric Little Bandbox, and B’s players like Marco Sturm, Aaron Ward, David Krejci, Patrice Bergeron and Shawn Thornton were sweating it out in their full hockey sweaters on a July afternoon.

It takes a young reliever both a little bit of time and lot of positive performances -- and rightfully so -- to earn their stripes in Sox manager Terry Francona’s bullpen structure. The 24-year-old Daniel Bard had already amassed his first career save earlier in the season, and has pitched in some “high-leverage” situations for Boston since his promotion from Triple-A Pawtucket back on May 12.

The Yankees are coming! The Yankees are coming!   Facing the Mariners, A’s and Royals in a 10-game cake of a homestand to close out of the first half of the baseball season, the Boston Red Sox were handed a golden opportunity to engineer some space between themselves and the arch-rival Yankees in the AL East.

MONTREAL -- As rumors have portended, many are expecting Phil Kessel to be dealt in the next 48 hours leading up the July 1 free agency frenzy. But don’t start sizing up the 21-year-old sniper for a Maple Leafs sweater quite yet. First of all, after ogling the haul that Anaheim received for D-man Chris Pronger over the weekend, scheming Toronto GM Brian Burke is now going to be asking for the sun, moon, stars and a few first-round draft pick cherries on top in exchange for puck-moving defenseman Tomas Kaberle.

MONTREAL – The first day of the 2009 NHL Draft began with morning rumors that had Phil Kessel being offered to the Toronto Maple Leafs in exchange for defenseman Tomas Kaberle, but a long Friday ended without much fanfare at all in the way of wheeling and dealing.

Does a hockey team have a fatal flaw if its front office brain trust refuses to acknowledge it? Amid an economy that’s dropping faster than Wily E. Coyote over a desert cliff, that seems to be the question of summer for a Bruins team poised to sweep through a critical period of free agency and roster-building. The chant has become louder and louder from inside the walls on Causeway Street that things might have been different this spring had both Andrew Ference and Matt Hunwick been available during the postseason.

Even weeks after the season came to a surprising, premature, resounding thud in the overtime of Game 7 against the Carolina Hurricanes -- a defeat that had both GM and head coach lamenting the better team didn’t win the series -- the ending is still a bitter pill for those associated with the Bruins.
